Some are saying on one of the sites that Petersen expressed mild interest, but it didn't get much further than that as I doubt he seriously is interested in leaving. I think Petersen is a guy that likes to be wanted, but I don't think he is leaving Boise either.

I'd actually be happy with Fedora and I could accept Sumlin, Strong, or Smart. For some reason Calhoun just doesn't excite me, and that is about the only one of the viable candidates that I am rooting against at this point.

Say whatever you want as to how badly A&M is going to fare, but I would love it if UT had a home schedule like that. Even if we went 0-4, that would be crazy fun.

They can just put an offer on the table if he's their man.

That's what I was saying back in that other thread. If I had to choose between SEC football in my own backyard or an indie-network I'd take SEC football. Yes I'd love an indie-network but c'mon. SEC FOOTBALL! So cool. I'd be jealous of UT if they were playing these programs while 90 miles away I was going head-to-head with Kansas.

Texas A&M athletics director Bill Byrne continued to interview possible replacements Tuesday in New York to replace fired football coach Mike Sherman, including a wild-card candidate in Air Force head coach Troy Calhoun, according to sources.

Byrne's meeting with Calhoun surfaced Tuesday and gained steam throughout the day on social media outlets. He was the offensive coordinator for the Houston Texans in 2006 and has coached Air Force to a 41-23 record in five years. Current A&M defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter came from Air Force.

While Calhoun was an addition to the pool of candidates, Southern Mississippi's Larry Fedora is no longer a candidate. Fedora, who graduated from A&M Consolidated, has been hired at North Carolina according to North Carolina's Fayetteville Observer and Winston-Salem Journal.

Byrne also has interviewed Houston's Kevin Sumlin and Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart, according to sources. Sumlin also is the main target of Illinois athletics director Mike Thomas, reports the Chicago Tribune. Smart, who also interviewed Tuesday, is extremely interested in the job, according to sources. The hesitance on A&M's side is because of Smart's lack of head coaching experience, but sources say Smart remains in the running.

Louisville's Charlie Strong is still interested, according to sources who also said A&M hasn't received permission to interview Strong. He agreed to a seven-year extension with Louisville in October. Strong makes $2.3 million annually, and he would owe Louisville $2.5 million if he took another job.

It has to be Sumlin. All of these interviews, etc were just done to appease everyone and say they had a real "process" instead of just hiring "their guy" again (even though that is what they are going to do).

That said, I don't think Sumlin is a bad hire. Not a great hire, but I don't think it is a bad one either.

    Haha^^

Hope it works out. Hope we're not looking for another coach in 4 years. Hope Brian Stewart stays in Houston.

Its like getting dispatched to Nam. You're all scared. Bombs are going off. But a plane comes in, the General is on board, ready to lead you into battle. You feel a little better. A glimmer of hope. You expect Captain America to walk off that plane. Instead... you get Forest Gump.

    On one hand, I agree.

On the other hand, I felt 100x better the Sunday after Texas Tech than I did the Sunday after OU.

Marquee games aren't very fun if you lose.

Sumlin is not the right fit for Texas A&M or the SEC: this is a big mistake. UH's downfall is defense. SEC is all about defense. The spread run and shoot offense won't work in the SEC. What are the Aggies thinking?

I guess is just depends on the person. I enjoyed going to both the KSU and OSU games this year much more than KU or TT. If I'm going to make the effort to deal with traffic, go to the stadium, etc - I want to see something exciting where I don't already know the outcome going in.

Why won't it work in the SEC? Urban Meyer and Gene Chizik had no problem making spread offenses work over the last several years. Or looking further back, Spurrier did pretty well with the fun & gun.
