A lot of usually non-complaining alumni were saying this game had a completely different feel throughout the week, that the teams focus was not on the game and laid the blame on the coaching staff. In the game, the play calling was laughable in certain situations. Basically just what's already going around. I'm not involved in the athletics program so I don't have an inside opinion on it, so I'm not sure how much is sour grapes and how much is true. Would like to hear what mattj has heard......
FWIW, Sumlin has never really had a great reputation "behind closed doors." Edit: In terms of his treatment of others I mean. This could easily be jilted people who were treated poorly now crying sour grapes.
So let's see, Sumlin has already accepted a job at ASU, A&M, and now Illinois. He's going to be a busy guy.
UH fans need to travel for the bowl game. I mean, it's Dallas, Texas, it ain't that far. My friends before the USM game were like "Yeah, I hope UH gets the Sugar Bowl cause I'll definitely be there". No they're all like "Meh, sucks they didn't win but don't really want to go". **** YOU!
Losing the coach won't hurt us as bad as losing our semi-pro quasi-AARP quarterback. The offensive system that Sumlin and the offensive staff has in place can be easily duplicated by any other spread guru. Sumlin will be missed, but he should be relatively easy to replace. Need new defensive coaches/recruiters though.
The more I think about it, the more i've been able to come to terms with this: 1. In his press conference following the loss to USM, Sumlin said he challenged young players to stay committed to success by asking them if they were a part of a one-year team or a successful program?. Two days later, he's interviewing for another (better) job. This is an example of the hypocrisy in college football. Student athletes committ their future to these coaches, but college coaches don't have the same skin in the game, even when they're under contract. 2. If you look at his resume, he's jumping around all the time. The more I think about it, not sure why we should have expected otherwise at UH. It seems like he's on to a new job every 3 or 4 years. UH is clearly not any different. 3. He's given a lot of credit for our recent success. But how much of that success is due to his impact, versus Case Keenum's? Sumlin was 3-7 last year without Keenum, and if you'll recall, Keenum was a Briles recruit. 4. Under his direction, we were never able to field a well-rounded team. While our offensive was reliably great, our defense was reliably horrible. As a program, we have a great future. The effect of losing Sumlin in actuality isn't as important to the program as is making sure we have a capible replacement. And our program is much more attractive than when we hired Sumlin.
The Sumlin rumors clearly affected the team's performance in the championship game. I have watched every game this season and they looked like a different team. It was like their heads were elsewhere. Plus they were slipping and sliding, but USM players weren't. (longer cleats?) The two teams that USM lost to were beaten overwhelmingly by UH. Yes, all teams have bad games, but UH looked absolutely out of sync, distracted, and preoccupied. I still don't think USM is the better team, but clearly they were on the day the game was played. It is a shame that coaching politics can absolutely ruin a team's season, affect the careers of all its players, and crush its fans. Just not fair or right. If Sumlin is going, then leave already. I hope UH can find a coach who really wants to become Bill Yeoman II and build the program and make a career doing it.
agreed 100% with you and Solid...at the end of the day, all we can hope for is someone committed to the program thoughout the entire season, and Saturday's loss showed he wasn't...its a shame but we need a Defense scheme and recruits that can stop people...

Every time I drive or walk by the Astrodome, I wonder what it looks like on the inside. Then I actually ponder what it probably looks like and wish that I hadn't done that.
Well the new lines being built will connect to the current (Red) line, so you could take the rail to reliant from UH. It would probably take too long, though! ..oh, and the new lines aren't scheduled to finish until like 2014, lol
The longer this drags out, the likelihood of Sumlin staying increases. If this was a done deal, Sumlin would not have attended the football banquet and most definitely would not have put himself in the fire at the BE celebration party.
