So I am at this conference in Washington. Had a few beers at one of these parties that are sponsored by one of the companies presenting at the conference. Talked to a few people, including a couple of chicks.

At 10 p.m., felt hungry, so I left and looked for a place to eat. Apparently, all the places here (National Harbor) close at 10 p.m., so they referred me to this bar/restaurant here.

I ordered another beer and a lot of food and ate it (total bill probably like $ 40 or 50 or something). When I was ready, the waiter comes to me and says "Your bill has already been taken care of".

I was like . Told the guy I just arrived from Germany one day ago and I don't know anyone here and this must be an error.

When I insisted, the guy said "I don't know who did it myself, but someone at the bar who wants to remain anonymous paid for your bill".

I kept looking around, but I didn't see anyone who would be looking at me to check my reaction or anything.

So I left $ 5 as a tip for the waiter and left.

I'm still . Cheapest dinner ever, I guess.

I just hope it was a chick and not a dude .

$5 as a tip? That is a really small tip for a free meal, come on ATW, we are a 20% tipping nation, our waitstaff does not get paid an adequate hourly wage like they do in Europe.

    Cool story though !

    Tip should have been $20.

Well, the waiter said the bill was already "fully taken care of", so I assumed he had already gotten a tip as well. I only had $ 5 change...I assumed this would be on top of what he had already gotten. I was going to pay by credit card and it was kind of pointless at this point to ask him for a credit card bill.

Oh lord. Let's not get into this again. Since when did it go from 10% to 20%? With that said, I usually tip 20% but I still rage about it.

A cheap dinner, or a cheap diner? $5 is ludicrous for free food, even if it wasn't comped by the restaurant or staff themselves.

Next time drop a $20. Then sit down, have another drink or 2, and wait to see if someone comes over.

It's hilarious that the two guys who are lecturing me about tipping more are the ones who have not contributed anything to the tip jar, after 5 years and 9 years, respectively :).

So you assume that if the waiter tells you "the bill has fully been taken care of", the person who did that did not include a tip?

Or do you think that the waiter should get a 40 % tip in this case?

He did 10%. How is that 'bad'? People saying he should drop 40% are stupid. It doesn't matter that it was a free meal. Why should the waiter get double tip just because someone else pay for it?

I actually don't know if it was $ 50 because I never saw a bill. Might have been $ 30. No idea. I didn't look at the prices when I ordered.

Also, not to be mean, but all the waiter (nice guy) did was take my order and bring me one beer (and come back twice to ask if everything was ok). He didn't even deliver the food, someone else did. Total time he invested: Probably like 20 seconds, max. I'd take that hourly wage, even if my $ 5 were all he got.

Did you talk to anyone in the bar? Gave looks?

I assume you must've attacked that plate like nothing else, hence maybe someone felt bad.
