Pyromania is a better album, more solid songs.

Appetite for Destruction is an uneven affair but has two great, career-defning songs, Welcome to the Jungle and Sweet Child o' Mine.

Poser bands like Poison or Warrant are probably better comparisons.

Personally, I enjoyed Def Leppard a HELLUVA lot more than G n R but that was because their songs were very catchy and Axyl Rose is such an assclown. So, I voted Def Leppard.

But if I put on my music critic hat, G n R wins and it is not even close. Appetite had a greater influence than Pyromania.

gotta whole-heartedly disagree. Appetite is close to a solid album as you're gonna ever get. The only song I consider weak on it is Anything Goes. The whole album is strong enough to be played in its entirety on tour.

    BOOOOOO!!!!

the hit songs arent even the best tunes on that album - f***in' nighttrain, its so easy, out ta get me, mr. brownstone and craz-ay will always rock my world

appetite is a f***in' holocaust of drug-addled rock and roll mania, not to mention that axl rose is a f***in' street poet at the peak of his lyrical prowess. shakespeare on smack. side one of that album is about as perfect as you can get.

Happily the vote results are better then the comments. Appetite is one of the most complete/flawless albums I've ever listened to. It's beautifully put together from start to finish.

I enjoy both bands and Pyromania is definitely a classic, but I don't think it's anywhere close.

I always thought of Def Leppard as a superior british version of Bon Jovi. That's not meant as a knock on them, just more apt comparison than GNR.

You could actually say that about Pyromania as well. Top to bottom it was solid. Stagefright and Die Hard The Hunter are incredible songs.

These two albums are remarkably similar in songs. Welcome to the Jungle lit a fire under Guns album in the same way as Rock of Ages did back in the day. The song began Gunter glieben glauben globen was so original, if you were around at that time.

Photograph was like sweet child of mine.

Maybe when they got to the "Pour Some Sugar on Me" era - but not the early stuff.

Pyromania has 1 truly perfect pop song - Photograph - but Appetite for Destruction is as close to a perfect album as you'll find. Not to mention that AfD was a game-changer in the music industry - Pyromania sold a lot of copies but didn't "inspire" a legion of clones.

I like Def Leppard, but cover to cover, Appetite is a damn near perfect album.

g n' r was more traditional 'hard rock' while def leppard was on the 'pop' side. thats not a slight on them, but my point is that they were operating in two different sub-genres so its an apples to oranges comparison.

but lyrically speaking there is no comparison. lets review...

where joe elliot politely asks his girl to pour some sugar on him in the name of love axl tells his woman to take her credit card down to the liquor store and get one for her and two for him. its not about love or any of that garbage - its about getting loaded and making his girl pay for it. thats rock n' roll.

or in photograph, where joe elliot describes himself as a rock n' roll clown w/ a photograph of a girl he likes. he asks his girl to put her hurt on him if she dares...axl on the other hand demands that his "b****" turn around so he can make use of her...axl is going to put the hurt on her and he aint askin'...he is telling her. the listener doesnt know if this is against her will or not, but one can assume. either way, its clear axl isnt pining away over some photograph...he is getting f***ed up at some chicks expense and then having his way with her...rock n' roll!

I have no defense for Def Leppard, except that Pyromania perfected the over-produced rock album sound like no other.

GnR has just always grated on me, ever since I saw them live with the Cult at the old Coliseum in Houston, circa 1987 or 1988.* They were horrible live, and their sound is just so tinny and derivative to my ear. Throw in the ass-clownishness and earnestness, and I just hear a heap of fail for them. I totally admit this is super-biased and personal and I know they're a good rock band, beloved by many.

So I'm voting, based on nothing very objective: the Leppard.

    * = pardon the retelling... they opened for the Cult and most of the audience was just waiting out the opening act. GnR did "Knockin' on Heavens Door," and the mic was handed around the audience. A big Texan in wifebeater took the mic and said, in our best homeland accent: "This band ****in' sucks!" to the loudest cheers GnR received.
