A report in Saudi Arabia has warned that if Saudi women were given the right to drive, it would spell the end of virginity in the country.

The report was prepared for Saudi Arabia's legislative assembly, the Shura Council, by a well-known conservative academic.

Though there is no formal ban on women driving in Saudi Arabia, if they get behind the wheel, they can be arrested.

Saudi women have mounted several campaigns to try to overturn the ban.

Aside from the practical difficulties it creates, they say it is also illogical as in trying to keep them under family control and away from men, it actually puts them in daily contact with a male driver.

The issue has received huge international attention.

Some Saudi women feel it has attracted too much interest, obscuring other equally important issues.

As part of his careful reform process, King Abdullah has allowed suggestions to surface that the ban might be reviewed.

This has angered the conservative religious elite - a key power base for any Saudi ruler.

Now, one of their number - well-known academic Kamal Subhi - has presented a new report to the country's legislative assembly, the Shura.

The aim was to get it to drop plans to reconsider the ban.

The report contains graphic warnings that letting women drive would increase prostitution, p*rnography, homosexuality and divorce.

A Saudi woman who has campaigned for women drivers told the BBC that the report was completely mad.

She said the head of the Shura had assured women campaigners that he was still open to hearing the case for lifting the ban.

The one in the front is showing way too much skin. How dare she do that! It's her fault if she gets raped. If that happens, the only way she should avoid an honor killing is to marry her rapist. She is going to cause more people to turn homosexual! She should get 100 lashes. Maybe she should also get stoned.

I was going to post this yesterday, but I knew ATW would get to it. The Muslim prophets wife was business lady, I'm sure she would take whatever form of transport was available in that day.

I don't think they're using the stick shift correctly if they're losing their virginity by driving...

And this is why I don't take religion seriously.
Christians do this too, except its more subtle.

Even though I don't think driving is any kind of a human right, I agree that these laws and the reasoning behind them are completely regressive and unavoidably linked to Islam.

Yes, clearly a strong indicator in the deficiency of gender equality in the Muslim world. No argument here. I've always felt that the hijab and manteau should be completely sufficient for the pious woman, anyway. The burqa belongs in a museum, if you ask me.

The honor killing is a pre-Islamic Bedouin practice that unfortunately stuck around. From what I've read in the Qur'an it doesn't seem to be condoned at all. As a matter of fact, when Islam was first introduced in Arab societies, the rights and treatment of women took a positive upward turn. Trends do wane, unfortunately.

A draconic practice not exclusive to women. Something that should be abolished in any modern society.

Interestingly enough, I don't think stoning is mentioned in the Qur'an even once, though it is mentioned in both the Old Testament and New Testament. This punishment for disobedient and promiscuous woman is an overall Abrahamic tradition that is unfortunately still practiced by, I presume, exclusively Islamic societies today.

In regards to the topic, it's not that the cleric says something like this that I find disturbing, it's the contingency, no matter how minor, that is going to inevitably believe it to be gospel. I've always been a staunch believer of Islam having moral value as a religion, and always having been capable of advancement in the modern world--people tend to forget that at one point in time, Islam was in fact a very progressive ideology (scientifically, philosophically, and artistically) and created one of the most advanced civilizations of its era.

It wasn't long ago that Europe itself had issues of morality: slavery, standardized racialism, brutal proselytization/colonialism, and ultra-nationalism that led to some very bloody wars. I do not mention this as an excuse, but rather as a beacon of hope. Islam is still mired in a culturally stunted era of its lifespan. History shows us that power and enlightenment are always in a state of fluctuation. To alter the old American expression, "The Middle East will rise again."

I foresee a world in which the Middle East, much like Europe, will be able to secularize its governments while still maintaining its religious culture and history. I hope to see it in my lifetime.

I apologize for my ramblings. Just some thoughts on the issue I wanted to get out.
