The coaching change itself is not going to lead to tanking

For me, the thing that sticks out is when Morey said that McHale "blew us away" in the interviews.

I really want to know what was said in that interview.

Tanking is really in the hands of the GM, not the coach.

Morey can trade ppl, he can also have operations scheduled mid season, recovery periods extended, etc etc, of course this sort of action could really only be done as an extension of the owner, and Les seems firmly against it.

There's probably only one guy in the world who doesn't like K-Mac, and let me be the first to say, screw Rambis :p

So wait, there are people out there that thing that we are tanking because we hired McHale as a head coach and behind him there is one of the most complete/great coaching staff out there???

So if we just hired Lawrence Frank and brought a mediocre staff behind him we would be a better team???

    hahah pathetic way of thinking

McHale was broth here for 2 main reasons, to be the face of a great coaching staff (he made DM think that he is the right man to coach a winning team), but the main reason is what he bring outside the court.

Do you think that DM, having Adelman or McHale besides him on a FA meeting (or whatever) is the same???

    And larsv8

What I think "blew us (DM) away", was the coaching talk. I think McHale was only an option in the beginning because of the prestige/name he brings to the things extra basketball, and I think Morey wants someone with that aura near him when talking to players, helping deals get done. I think McHale surprised Morey when they started talking about basketball. Coaching is about principles, it is about what do you set as main priorities. Everyone knows that defence wins games, everyone knows that rebounding is crucial, but how much to you talk and teach your players about it. Just listen to him talk in recent interviews, all he does is, DEFENSE REBOUNDING, FAST BREAK EASY POINTS. These are the 3 main thing you hear, and these are the 3 things that he will set as main goals for the team.

Hopefully it went a little something like this..

Morey: So Kevin we are interested in what you can bring to our organization. Can you explain a little how you will be able to send us the the promise land?

McHale: I really admire the Rocket's organization resiliency in extracting 100% the effort out of each team member throughout the season.. I want to continue to do that by utilizing the younger members of the team. I know it might not mount to wins right away and is sort of the two steps back 1 step forward approach but I feel that is the best way. It also might mean a lesser than stellar record at the end of the year but I do see alot of potential in younger core. I'm looking at a 3-5 yr plan and will guarantee we will be better than in years past.

Morey: ... Oh I see wel...

McHale: Acutally with the direction I want to see this team to go might amount to some good draft picks in the next couple of years..

    Morey: When can you start?

Yep. From the interviews it seemed like Morey had fairly low expectations of McHale as an Xs&Os guy. But McHale ended up showing he has great grasp of basketball. In hindsight, this makes sense given how he played for the Red Aurbach and was always a cerebral player.

McHale presided over the most successful decade of Minnesota Wolves entire franchise history. They were a joke before him and were a joke after him. Given the owner he had to work with, the location of Minnesota, the lack of funds, a conference finals appearance doesn't look that bad.

So by this logic, adelman was fired for winning while Morey wanted opposite. The Rockets took a huge setback hiring Mchale just so Morey can dictate who plays and who doesnt

Not totally correct, Morey did not want to lose, but he wanted to take a longer view and develop some of the young players, which might mean losing, or it might not.

For instance playing CBud over Battier made us better, but Adelman would have never made that change on his own.

Or in Brooks case, he was not right, but Rick kept putting him out there trying to help his confidence, but moving him, settled Lowry some, and set a clear order at that position, again....better for the team, but something the coach would not do.

Sometimes the GM has to take a little longer view, even if the coach doesn't like it.
