You mean the Bobby Petrino that has Arkansas in the top 10, despite not having nearly the level of talent of LSU or Alabama, or probably even Florida? How about we ask Urban Meyer, who brought an aggressive spread offense and did just fine with it? Auburn did pretty well with a great offense / crappy defense strategy last year as well.

You have to be different if you want to establish yourself in the SEC. Just trying to be Alabama-lite is a recipe for failure.

OK, if you don't think Sumlin can get the job done, then what "big time coach" do you suggest.

I absolutely agree, Sumlin is a REALLY BAD choice for A&M, they should forget about him, not the right fit, at all! He should stay at UH where he can beat up on cupcake teams. Actually ASU is also a bad fit.

Sumlin will have a lot of options. He could stay at home, move an 1.5 hours away and make a lot more money, or move to Brentwood and experience awesome weather and LA scenery and make good money too.

honestly, i dont know if i want sumlin...i think i still prefer kirby...the SEC is more about defense..not flying offenses...and now, for the most part, the top SEC teams beast at both defense and are very solid at offense. aTm needs an SEC coach, not CUSA....

Yeah, not too many on the Sumlin wagon but it appears he is the guy. I'll be surprised if he isnt the next coach. Some even saying it's already a done deal, announcement forthcoming but we shall see.

I seriously doubt it is a done deal considering that he is currently discussing a contract extension with UH.

Regardless, I am with MAJOR, he woud be an excellent fit. He would bring discipline, an excellent offensive philosophy and he really is not a light weight on defense. He holds his players accountable and you can see the difference in UH under Briles and Sumlin... Sumlin demands respect.

Oh. Well, I'll stand by that I'll be surprised if he isn't the next A&M coach.:p But I guess we'll see how this shakes out; if he becomes coach, how he does, etc.

The one thing I would trust Kevin Sumlin with is to get us an NFL-caliber quarterback. A good/great quarterback goes a LONG way in the SEC if you aren't going to have the smashmouth defenses of Alabama and LSU.

After digesting it for a day or so, I would be okay with Sumlin as an Aggie headcoach.

He is young and trying to make a name for himself, unlike the last 2-3 Aggie hires. He is does bring an energy and attitude to sideline, also unlike the past few hires.

The big thing, is that apparently he is an amazing as a recruiter. I truly think that being younger and being a good recruiter will help A&M get top notch players not only at the positions they already recruit well, but also at the positions that they have had issues with getting the truly top notch players such as QB. (Yes, I know the past Aggie QB's were all rated highly, but apparently they were not the right ones rated highly. Which is my point.)

Also with him having played linebacker in college (Yes. He played defense!!) I think he finally help A&M get the Linebackers they have not been able to get consistently since the mid-90's, with Von being the sole exception. That by itself will immensely help the defense.

Sumlin is smart guy, so I have no doubt he will make a good hire on defense. Honestly, I still really like DeRuyter's system. It is pretty unpredictable and puts pressure on the QB. The biggest issue this year though is that without Von, they got ZERO pressure without blitzing. That makes it incredibly difficult to play defense in the Big 12 with all the good QB's. If Sumlin can recruit those DE's and OLB's to bring that without needing to blitz, it will fix a lot of the issues the Defense had. (Oh. They also need a new CB coach, because they still cannot find one who can actually get players to learn ball skills.)

Sure Sumlin is not the amazing hire that will shock the world. Only person the board who could do that would be Tressel, but there is no chance he takes a job this offseason. He is likely 2-3 seasons away from coming back.

I don't understand where the cash is coming from. They're still paying Franchione. They have somewhere around $15-20 million in exit fees to pay. Now they're paying Sherman's buyout and still hope to have enough cash to attract a top notch coach. My guess is this only further delays repayment of the interest free loan from the university's general fund (your tax dollars). Holy crap what a trainwreck. Sumlin has reportedly been offered $4 million per year by ASU. How do Ags possibly have the cash to match that now?

Sumlin, Tressel, hell, you can dig up Bear Bryant to coach A&M and they'll still get their ass handed to them in the SEC for the next three or four years.
    Them's the facts

Aggies always ragging on UH, then they want our coach, go figure. They probably lust after our uniforms too. Probably wish their school campus was in Houston so they would have something to do. Throwing cow chips gets old.
