    No, he can't.

If this isn't bogus, I'd expect perhaps the last year is partially or fully unguaranteed, and Gasol is holding out. Considering this is Heisley, and they messed around with Xavier Henry's rookie deal, they also might be putting in some performance incentives that get you up to the max deal, but aren't yet reported.

BimaThug, is there anything in the CBA preventing Poison Pill Provisions placed in restricted free agent contracts as is commonly done in the NFL? For example; if at any time in 2011, Marc Gasol is NOT the highest paid player on his team, he immediately is paid 15% of his remaining contract as a signing bonus; if at any point in the contract he plays more than 10 games in the state of Tennessee during a season, he will be allowed unlimited use of a G5 jet, an 8-ball and 3 22-year old bi-curious college coeds (No Fatties), etc. that will make it impractical for Memphis to match an offer sheet?

    Those numbers are inaccurate.

If you go with the 25% of the cap number (which is what the max will be accoring to Larry Coon) Gasol's max is $84M/5years (16.85/y) or $62M/4years (15.5/y).

If you go with the 48.04% number ("Rules governing maximum individual salaries for new contracts are the same as under the 2005 CBA" - leaked summary of new CBA agreement) it's 79/5 or 58/4.

I think TheGreat is referencing Morey's penchant for allowing the market to set the price on a rfa and matching.

Seriously, this whole thing just reeks of "totally false."

Yep, I would rather wait to see what he gets offered then match..

I doubt someone offers him the MAX.

very few centers in the league and the real Gasol can play. He might not get max but he will get close to it.

If Marc Gasol/Nene is your max contract player, you know you are in trouble.

By the same logic, if Pau Gasol is your max contract player, you know you're in trouble. If Chris Bosh is your max contract player, you know you're in trouble.

But there is one thing you should know. A team is capable of fitting more than one max player under contract at one time.

Supply and demand. They don't make Centers like they used to.

Both guys wouldnt even be top 6 centers in the 90's

Nene and Gasol wouldn't even be top 20 centers in the 90's.

Both guys aren't getting paid like a top 6 center in the 90s. Hakeem, DRob, Ewing, Shaq, etc. were making 40-50% of the salary cap at the of their dominance. 5yr/75 mil would be roughly 20% of the cap. Or half of what a top centers in the 90s made.

The tide is getting high with this kind of b.s., I would wait until it settles. It doesn't matter if he is one of the few good centers if yet he's not even a top 25 player in the league. Him or Nene shouldn't get that kind of money.

The salary cap in the 90's was between $14-30 mil. How is your statement possible?

This. I think he really doesn't want to stay in Memphis. Can't blame him especially he is from Spain!

Well Jordan according to Basketball reference made 30 million in 96-97 and 97-98.
