Look one thing I like about Morey is that he puts a value on a player and sticks to it, if his value on Chuck is below what other teams are going to pay, then I believe Chuck walks. The Rockets can have Chuck Hayes, they just have to match the highest offer......and if they TRULY wanted him, they would. DD
Different CBA, But Matt Bonner got 4yrs/16mil last year. On that basis whst is chuck worth? If you think fair market value for Chuck is $3 mil per for a couple of years, you are mistaken. Best case, IMO, on the open market would be 4yr/$20mil. If you get that, you are getting him at good value. My guess it will be more like 4 yrs/$23 mil.
I wonder if Chuck would be willing to do a Nick Collision style contract, with a large signing bonus facilitated by the Rockets current extra cap room in exchange for a smaller overall cap number in 2013 and beyond. For example, Hayes could sign a 4-year deal starting at $3M with max-bird raises, which would give him a total of $13.4M. According to Bima's numbers (obviously preliminary), the Rockets have roughly $8.5M in space without Chuck's cap hold committment; if they paid him an additional $5.5M signing bonus in 2011-12, that would take his total compensation to $18.9M over 4 years, which is comparable to the full mid-level (4/$21.4M), while freeing up an extra $2M in 2013 and still allowing the Rockets to use the $2.5M under-cap exception this summer if they want to take a flyer on someone. The main problem is timing however; it would certainly be the last major move the Rockets would be able to make, and it seems likely they want to wait and see if there's a chance that they can get Nene or Chandler; except Chuck might be the first priority of some contending teams, and be unwilling to wait around as a backup plan.
For a player you dont want as your permanent starting center? You are not paying him alot of money to continue to want to replace him. If Morey does he is just wrong.
Luis Scola 30 PER = 18.4 Chuck Hayes 28 PER = 16.2 Chuck is arguably the best PF defender in the NBA. One of the top 5 even from the most deluded perspective. Chuck has improved his offense to the point where he is a viable threat, ranking right in the middle of the pack as far as PPG is concerned at the C position. His ability to pass and handle the ball is extremely valuable. His ability to either win his matchup or significantly stifle the best bigs in the league (Blake Griffin, Amare Stoudamire, Dirk Nowitzki) is astonishing, but he does it. He is the team captain of the Houston Rockets, and he is a fairly young player. Luis Scola at 9 million? Chuck Hayes at 4.5 million? Last year showed me all I need to know. Chuck goes out and we lose. Scola goes out, and Patterson takes his place, and we play just as well.
The Rockets might be hesitant to sign Chuck until they see what other options are available. That sound about right?
Didn't they already offer him a contract and he turned it down? I think they're hesitant to overpay for Hayes. Probably has a number in mind. If Hayes can find a better number elsewhere, he's gone. If not, he'll return.

Has anyone posted the chron article yet that says Chuck's leaning toward Houston? On one hand, I'm surprised because it seems to me the smart move is to take part or all of an MLE from a contender. On the other hand, the 4 offers they say he's gotten have been from crappy teams. I too would rather stay in Houston than sign with Sacramento. But, an offer from a contender could still come in -- will Chuck still lean toward Houston if that happens?
I do want Chuck back, but at the right price and role. He should be smart enough to stay away from Toronto and Sacramento. Minnesota and the T-Blazers are more or less in our same position. I thought more teams closer to championships would be offering but I guess not.
