The coaching change itself is not going to lead to tanking

So if Morey had brought in Dwayne Casey or Lawrence Frank or kept Adelman, his treatment of players like meat would somehow not sink in? That the players are so moronic that they would be blinded by the greatness that are "former hot assistants" that they would not see Morey's insidious plotting?

I don't necessarily disagree...though I'd trust Rick to get MORE out of the same talent pool than I would expect to see under McHale. So in that sense, I think the argument isn't completely without merit.

I'm assuming this post is to address fans like me. I posted this in an earlier thread:

"In case you haven't noticed, the "tanking" has already begun. Whether or not fans like it or not, the team is in full rebuild mode. The moment McHale, better known to many in Minnesota as McFail, was brought in to "coach" this team, Morey had already decided that this team is better off building through the draft. As I had mentioned before, "McFail is the perfect man for the job, because he'll play the young players that we have (cultivating talent) while losing a crap ton of games without actually trying to tank games. This is the perfect cover by Morey. "

It's baffling to me how so many fans haven't figured this much out already. Everybody knows that Morey is a numbers guy. What in McHale's career post-playing days would suggest that McHale is going to come in here and win 50 games this season? Adelman was one of the NBA's top coaches. McHale's decision-making (coaching and front-office management) set the T-Wolves back a good 10 years and the only reason he even lasted that long was because for whatever reason, he was chummy the owner and the rest of the front office. Morey knows this and, no matter how poorly the Rockets perform this year, management can simply chalk this season up to "coaching-re-adjustment". The only thing the Rockets can count on McFail to do is to play (cultivate) our young talent. I highly doubt McFail is the long-term solution at coach. You don't bring in a dude that has lost FAR more games than he has won to coach a "contending" team. Really it is THAT simple. "

If you honestly believe McHale was brought in here to carry the Rockets to an NBA title, you are living a pipe dream. How can you honestly believe that a man with his pathetic track record (as both a coach and front office exec) is going to carry to "infinity and beyond". I can probably group you in with the "fans that refuse to accept that the Rockets are rebuilding". Sometimes you have to take a step back to take 10 steps forward. I'm not saying McHale was brought in specifically to "tank" games, but I mean his track record really is piss poor. You have to imagine Morey took this into consideration and knows that know matter how well McHale performs (given the same talent) that he will not be able to outperform Adelman, which would in turn give the Rockets a better shot at obtaining a higher pick in the draft. If there is one thing people should know about Morey, it's that he never sits idle. He is always looking for ways to improve the team. The rebuilding process is going to take some time and fans are going to have to be patient, so just sit back and relax and let Morey do his job. There is a reason why he's where he is and we're here talking on this forum.

I learned very early on in life that "The only constant in life is change", the sooner you accept that, the better off you'll be. You just have to find a way to adapt. Given the cards that Morey has to work with, he's done a pretty decent job. While the effects won't be immediately apparent, we'll be able to look back a few years from now and see that these current changes are for the better.

Yea it's pretty obvious that if Minny had Phil Jackson instead of McHale they would have been in the WCF at the very least.

Are you actually going to debate with me whether or not McHale is better coach then Adelman? Do you even know why the T-Wolves are perennial bottom-dwellers? It has a crap-ton do do with McHale's track record not only as coach, but also as a GM.

Never said he was better than Adelman. I am saying, that judging his coaching ablities by his production with one of the worst franchises in the NBA is well... stupid.

And I'm telling you the T-Wolves are in their current predicament because of his plethora of dumb decisions as a GM and then as a coach. You can enlighten yourself by taking a trip to his wikipedia page found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kevin_McHale. He is the MAIN reason as to why the T-Wolves suck as much as they do. Sad part is, they could have saved themselves many years of agony by simply cutting him loose.

You are completely missing the point. You should go back and read what I read. Is Adelman a better coach then McHale. Hell yes. If given the same pool of talent, who would perform better. It's Adelman. Assuming the Rockets don't make significant changes to the roster, you can expect the team to perform worse than they did the previous year. As for your attempt at a snide comment in saying even the great Phil Jackson wouldn't be able take the T-Wolves to the WCF. Yeah, probably not, but he'd sure do a helluva alot better than McHale. The main reason as to why the TWolves have who they have on their team is because of McHale. He put that piece of crap roster together and then tried to coach them and he failed miserably, at both.

And you are completely overlooking a lot of factors and making assumptions on situations that are completely different.

First off, just forget about McHale's GM abilities. Not why we brought him here. Bringing that up as to why he will fail here is pointless. So anyway...

Last year, Adelman coached a team that had to try to work Yao back in to the rotation and then deal with a disgruntled/terrible performance from his starting poing guard. Two things our new coach and staff will not have to deal with.

When Yao went down we had no one to turn to and lacked the ability to go out and get anyone to replace him. This year Yao's contract is no longer holding us back. The talent pool ISN'T going to be the same. Rick did an amazing job doing what he could with an incomplete roster, but I have a feeling McHale is going to have a more complete roster to work with.

Just because he did a crappy job coaching a crappy roster that he picked in no way means he can't succeed with a more talented roster, with an excellent staff and top notch GM.

Coolio, you are focusing on McHale way more than you should be. The person you should be focusing on is Finch, who, btw, runs a similar offense to Adelmans.

With a more talented roster, with an excellent staff and top notch GM, ANYBODY would suffice. Look, the team is going to get worse before it gets any better. There is no point in going out there and picking up a Nene or an Andre Igoudala whom are in the twilight years of their primes who would only serve as band-aid solutions to the Rockets current roster woes when we are so far out of contention. Lets be honest here, teams like the Heat and Bulls are going to be in contention for at least the next 3-5 years, but even they've had to endure a few losing seasons to get to where they are now. This is an excellent time to cultivate younger talent and search for future stars via the Draft.

Many people have said this. Otherwise why would I bother starting a thread on it? I'd just respond to you in that particular thread.

If you think McHale is incapable of coaching a contender because he was medicore for a team that never had success before or after him, then that's your prerogative. But just because you believe he'll fail doesn't mean the Rockets brought him in to fail.

And honestly, I don't think he'll fail. And I am willing to backup this statement. I don't mind putting money where mouth is either, and willing to make tip jar wagers when the roster finally takes shape.

I think the real deal in the coaching staff is Kevin Sampson. While McHale will certainly be calling the shots in the game I'm guessing Sampson will be running practices. I know Turner did a lot of this for Adelman and Tom T did a lot of it for VanGrumpy.

Sampson has a ton of respect in the coaching comunity and is known for his defense so I'm excited.

I also like Sampson. I feel this coaching staff was brought in to integrate offense and defense. We were too heavily focused on D during JVG's era to Adelman who doesn't ask for a lot of accountability on D from his players. I'm curious to see how this coaching staff mesh the two aspects of the game. If they can do that and get our players to play both sides, then the staff would be a success.

I like the coaches too, but if they let Chuck Hayes walk, and play the young guys it will become painfully obvious to you and others that still hold out hope that we are not rebuilding or (gasp) tanking, that we are doing exactly that.

It's almost like this staff was built for this team.

We won't need to tank... Considering we go in with the same roster we had last year (or close to it) we won be very good, especially with the short camp!

I think K-Mac is a company man. That's why he was able to hold on to his previous job for so long, and it probably factored in to why Les and Daryl hired him. And I don't think I'm going out on a limb when I suggest that Les was not pleased with how blunt JVG and RA could sometimes be with the media. Just a hunch, but that's how I see it.
