I second that, I read the article on the first page for a bit before I realized it was from last year.

i dont buy into the people who think Morey wants to tank, it would devalue all his assets.

I think he wants to play those young guys to increase their stats and make them more valuable as trading chips/assets....

I dont either, I think his goal is simple. He wants these young players to improve enough to be high quality players, possibly all-star level. He wants this collection of young talent to grow and for the cream of the crop to rise on this roster, and trade away players that have already peaked to upgrade the roster.

All along collecting as many draft picks, and non-player ASSETS along the way. He knows that it takes all star talent to trade for a superstar, and if they cant do that they can still go deep in the playoffs with multiple all-stars. Its a good plan.

These players can turn the corner, and are not considered undervalued by any stretch of the imagination to the front office and coaches. Kyle Lowry, Kevin Martin, Patrick Patterson, etc. have the ability to be all star players in their eyes. Maybe not superstars, but good quality players. Having a solid playoff roster with tons of talent is the way to start. "Contender" or not.

What's he supposed to say this time of the year? "We're tanking, would you like to buy a season ticket package?"

Morey also was on 790 today. Sadly no audio though.

He'll probably be mostly on 610 due to their contract with the Rockets, but maybe the thread should be named Daryl Morey Radio Interviews (2011-12) or something like that.
I doubt people actually care which radio station he was on.

Also McHale was just on 610. Not sure if you guys want an extra thread for McHale. Not sure how often he'll be on the radio anyway.

Morey seems way to confident about playoffs considering he's not confident about getting Nene or keeping Hayes. He's mentioned trades. I think he must have a trade mostly worked out to bring in a center if Nene doesn't come here or even if he does.

I still think Iggy's on the way out. Recent reports of Lou Williams and Nocioni on the block with Philly looking to "go in a different direction". Philly writers keep on pointing out their core group of players are 24 yo. If they go young they also happen to save money which has been a concern for that franchise for a long time now.

We should keep it all in the same thread, I rememember Gerson Rosas did a couple interviews and they fit well in the Morey thread.

Liked that coach, while talking about inside scoring, thought of Morris and called him a power 3. I'm not sure Patterson has the skills to put the ball on the floor and get by the Gasols of the NBA, nonetheless I can't wait to see what he adds this year.

    http://houston.cbslocal.com/2011/12/22/morey-reacts-to-dalembert-signing/

    http://houston.cbslocal.com/?podcas...=true&config_file=config.xml&dcid=CBS.HOUSTON

Mike and John, how are you.

    Mike, John, good morning.

I'm just gonna say this because I feel it. I feel the best acquistion the Rockets can make today is Sam Dalembert. That is just me talking. Talking to you, anything happening?

We're planning to sign somebody. Can't say who. We do feel this helps our team this year and in the future as well.

I know you can't say but you have your eyes on a big. What can that do for your team at large here?

Obviously looking at a big. Someone who can protect the paint, rim, rebound. One FA we've been talking to for awhile. We feel this can help in the short and long term.

If this signing goes down, do you feel this team can be better defensively inside than last year?

Absolutely. When we had Yao Ming, we were the best defensive team for a 3 year stretch at end of his career there. Adding Dalembert, not saying we will be the best defensive team, because we got a long ways to prove that, we feel we can improve on last year when we were 18th and reaching our goal of being a playoff team. We need to keep our offense in the top 5 and improve the D to somewhere near the 10 range there.

Terrence threw down some filthy dunks last night. What can he do for you guys this season?

He's someone we're really hoping...If we're gonna be a playoff team, he's one of the guys,...we need someone to step up and play at a high level and Terrence has a real chance to do that. His talent level may be highest on the team. If he can step up, it will be a big advantage at that 3 spot. His ability to run the floor, defend, rebound and pass....he's unique at passing and rebounding especially. For him to contribute, we need him to minimize turnovers and go for the easy pass, and clean up his shot selection a bit. If he does those things, he can help us.

You think McHale, you think low post. Seems in early practices and preseason games, there is a big emphasis on D. What is he doing?

As coach said, you get better with what you work on. We've spent 70-80% of our practice time on D and re-establishing that foundation. With the signing we expect to sign today, that will be a big help. Having a big behind all our players on the perimeter. We've spent a lot of time on that. McHale and Sampson made that a big emphasis. So the challenge is work a lot on D and maintain our offensive prowess. It is a 2 sided game and need to be good at both. We need to maintain the offensive skill we showed last year, and improve the defense.

Marcus Morris had the big 3rd Q last night. What is his upside and how much will he play this season.

It was the 2nd Q. He made a bunch of shots. He has ability to defend multiple positions. Skilled offensively. With all rookies, we think we are good team. Just like Patterson last year having to go through a process to get on the floor, I think Marcus will as well. We're not a team, thankfully, where a rookie will come in and have an easy time playing. Obviously, it was nice for fans to see his potential. Marcus might take time to see the floor. I think thats good for rookies to go through a process to get on the floor and show how their work ethic can get them on the floor.

Following the Dalembert announcement yesterday, is this the team you'll finish the season with?

We're always trying to upgrade but we are comfortable with them if we did finish with them. Our goal is to make the playoffs with this group. My job is to try to keep improving the team, so if something comes along, that is something that will be on me. Coaching staff and I are comfortable with this team.

What does Hasheem need to show you to make this team or McHale I guess?

We've been encouraged by Hasheem. In his first stint, before he gets winded, and that should improve during the year, hes been effective. Our D has been effective with him out there. He is 7'3" and still developing his game so it doesn't look pretty. Fact is, he alters shots and makes things hard in the paint for the other team. He's putting in a strong, strong effort. He's been a very high effort guy. Only issue with Hasheem is his conditioning hasn't allowed him to go past the 5-10 minute range and be effective yet. We expect that to improve throughout the season. The bigs rotation will be who we are planning to sign, Luis, Patrick and Jordan. Hasheem is somebody can probably give us 5-10 minutes a night.

Name or two who we may not be thinking of but come end of the season, we'll say Daryl said that guy may have a break out year.

Terrence is someone we already talked about. We need to get at least one, and probably two surprises to make noise in the West this year. Terrence has a real shot to do that. It's probably no secret but Hill is a guy who will step up. His size and athleticism, so far in the preseason and in practice, you can't keep him off the offensive glass. That's a very underrated skill. Terrence and Jordan maybe two guys the fans haven't seen a ton of. We could use a breakout year from them and they might do it. Lowry could take another step forward. Courtney will be important, given his strength on D. Martin is committed on D and could have his first all-star season. Chase keeps improving every year. Obviously I'm going up and down the roster. I'm excited about this season. Patrick in his 2nd year too. Of course we arent the favorites but there are so many ways our team can get better than get worse that we're optimistic of reaching the playoffs and hopefully making some noise.

    Appreciate the time.

    Thanks for having me on.

So we're looking at a big as well as another guy to sign apart from Dalembert? Or was he just hinting about Dalembert?
