It demonstrated low football IQ. It was unnecessary and reckless and probably cost his team a win. "Trying to win" in that particular situation would have meant sliding to the ground and going on to the next play. Now, if they were behind, it would be a different story.
Oh, I agree it was wreckless for sure, but he was trying to make a play, if he didn't fumble it, the play would have been applauded. It happens, I am sure he learned from it. DD
bobrek is right that if the motive were trying to win, he would have slid. Sure, he was "trying to make a play". What was the motive? To showcase himself so he could angle for a starting job. It was a selfish, selfish, stupid play that cost us a game against our best rival. A game we had in our hands. That was then, and this is now--and I'd *love* to have the guy back in battlefightin' gear. But to excuse that play is silly. It is infamous for a reason.
That play was absolutely DEVASTATING at the time because we were on such a roll* as a team and it ruined the entire season. *We were 0-3 at the time
hardy har. It was devastating because you had a win against the Colts, in the prime of their dynasty, for only the second time in your franchise's pathetic existence, and you pissed away because your dumbass backup QB wanted to impress some scouts.
The fact is if he would not have fumbled the ball, we would not be having this conversation. He would be starting for us right now.
It's amazing how folks around here struggle with what a "fact" is. What you've given here, sir, is your own speculation. It's a far cry from "fact", indeed. In fact, it's pretty arguable speculation. Based on actual facts, like Ronsenfumble's TD/INT rate, for example. Also given Kubiak's history (whether we like it or not) of paying a guy to be the starter and handing the job to that guy without competition. Finally, two or three folks now have argued that the play would have been lauded had he not fumbled. I disagree whole-heartedly. I was screaming, "what the hell are you doing!!!" as soon as it was evident he wasn't going to slide. When his feet left the ground I facepalmed. The rest is history. Had he not fumbled, I am *very* confident the commentators would have been talking about the unnecessary risk that was and close he came to coughing the game away.
You don't know what his motive was. He was a football player that made a split second decision during a game, you don't know what was going on in his head. It turned out to be a bad decision. With 20/20 hindsight we know it was a bad decision, but for you to say it was a selfish decision is wrong. If I had a dollar for every time a football player made a bad decision during a game, I would be a millionaire many times over.
Ostensibly that is correct. That said, the whole gunning-for-a-chance-to-start thing was widely commented upon at the time and no one ever argued against it. He then worked hard to get a starting job that offseason (and IIRC the Texans let him go in order to let him have that chance). As such, I've given that a lot of credence. If it was really a split-second bad decision, it's just as negative of a commentary on him. You're up 17 and Peyton Freaking Manning is on the other sideline. You have like 5 mintues left in the game. If you don't know to slide, then you shouldn't be starting, indeed.
Oh good lord, who cares? That was years ago, this team could use him now.....trust me, I have plenty of plays that still piss me off.....and that one is weaksauce in comparison. Mike Renfro in the playoffs - inbounds. Don Bebe running out of bounds, not once but TWICE to score TD's in the infamous Bills game. Jerry Gray knocking the ball out of a receivers hand as he holds it up from the ground having NEVER been touched.....should have been a fumble.... At the end of the day......the Texans could really use Sage.....let's hope the Fins release him. DD
the only thing we needed from him in that game was to manage the game, but he does that trying to do heroic stuff, and he loses the ball. we didnt ask him to try and win the game.
Rosenfels hasn't thrown a pass in a game since 2008 and hasn't been healthy enough to be on an active roster in 2 years. Although I don't know if I can argue that Delhomme's a better alternative - he completed plenty of passes to the opposite team just last year. I agree that the Texans could use Sage if he were healthy, but given the fact that he's been given 2 injury settlements in the last 2 seasons (assuming Miami cuts him), what are the odds that he'll even be able to play?
What's the current situation here? I thought Miami waived him, did we not put in a claim to get Sage?
Hmmm... apparently Sage got his wish and was released after all. Wonder if Texans would still have interest, now that Delhomme is in fold. https://twitter.com/#!/MikeSilver/status/142362456373735424
Great timing with McNabb being released at the same time. Maybe Sage will be able to slip through the cracks all the way to a Texans waiver wire claim. I'd certainly welcome bringing him in.
