    1) Big East, is the CUSA with an tenuous automatic bid....after that probably ends, it's what exactly?
    2) lots of people. Why do you think Art Briles went to Waco? Do you think he would have gone if Baylor was slumming it in the SunBelt?
    3) Why? Because it's a plausible outcome of rational decision on risk v. reward. Pretty much all 3 of those jobs are more attractive than Houston.

Sensitive much? Why do you think UH loses coaches to a craphole like Baylor? It's simply not in the top tier of college coaching jobs, it's a fact, and it makes sense that their coach, who's stock is probably as high as it will ever be, would explore his options.

That's pretty much the long and the short of it. He has his short list of big time programs and a dollar figure in his head. No reason to go jumping at a tiny raise (or small pay cut, in some cases) simply to make a borderline lateral move. Summy's next gig is gonna be bigtime.

    1) Who knows. Key point is, it ain't CUSA and things will only get better on the competition front from here on out.

    2) Art Briles went to Waco for a few reasons, the most of which was the 1.5 million dollar pay raise and the fact he got to stay in Texas. Being in the Big 12 didn't hurt, but make no mistake, he wasn't going to take the job at Iowa State.

    3) Are they attractive to him? Probably not.

Of course he'll explore his options, that's just smart business. Probably to angle for a pay raise (I think his salary is due to increase next year, anyway). But really, people need to back off it. There are some programs out there Sumlin would definitely go to, I realize that more than anybody, but none of them are available at the moment.

Just sayin lol. Again, don't think he will leave at all period, but it is Penn St.
    - Big payday (they could probably 3x what UH could pay seeing they take their football that seriously)
    - Big time program
    - BCS conference against better talent
    - Abundance of recruiting

Oh definitely. They've got all the right stuff, even if the locale is a bit more East than perfect, the payday would be enormous. But stepping into the shadow of Paterno and that scandal seems like a career killer.

The chance to lock in a much higher salary for 5-6 years will be too much to resist, unless Sumlin is different from most other coaches. If UH wins out, I bet he's gone. Some team in a major conference will blow away whatever raise UH can offer. Look for rumors to get strong in late December and an announcement shortly after their bowl game.

That's what it would have to be, 2 or 3 times higher than what he's getting now. (1.3 million or so)

So far, none of the programs that have opened up have a history of coaching salaries that exceed 1.5 millionish.

UCLA will be able to do so, though they are said to want Chris Petersen first and Sumlin 2nd. UNC paid Butch Davis close to $3mm.

Sumlin isn't going anywhere... The football program is on the rise... They have enough talent to ensure 2/3 more magical seasons... Then he'll look to jump ship,perhaps... He wouldn't dare go to Penn St,IMO..... There's no way an African American coach is on top of their wish list , anyhow...

Everybody's been wanting Peterson for the last 5 years, but he hasn't been swayed. I don't see Sumlin going West. He has no connections out there. And UCLA is a sub-par PAC 12 job. He could get a better gig than that. And I'm not sure they could/would throw 3+ million at him.

How much does Sumlin make now? How big a raise can UH give him?

With the bonus he'll be earning this year, I think he's making in the neighborhood of $1,750,000.

He's the top paid coach in CUSA behind June Jones. (Who got a ridiculous contract)

In fact, he's earning more than Art Briles this year.

I think O'Leary at UCF makes more than Sumlin

Not trying to be a know-nothing tardo, but don't points 1 and 2 kind of conflict with each other? If you can so easily blow off the Big 10, then what does that say about the Big East?

Sure, Sumlin's dream job might not be open, but as UH will likely take a step back next year, I don't see his profile getting any higher than it will be after this season, so it would be smart for him to get his $$ while the getting's good. As a Rice fan, I certainly wouldn't be mad at that :p
