If player's salaries exceed 49%, then players get to keep their own escrowed wages up to 51% BRI. Otherwise, they are only guaranteed 49%. A drop from 57% guaranteed to 49% guaranteed is 8% or $320 mil ($4 bil x 0.08). The future players will give up $320 mil/yr on their wages to the owners. It's actually more than $320 mil, if you account for BRI increasing more than $4 bil. The owners get back the $320 mil to cover $300 million in losses, so they are able to make a profit again.

One big item, I think, is the lack of true up mechanism if the 10% escrow doesn't cover salary in excess of the BRI split. Basically, it is up to owners not to go wild on salary. If they spend more than 55.56%, they will end up paying more than 50%.
I thought if the escrow didn't make up for the overages, it was taken out of future checks in subsequent years
While I know many think the players got nothing new under this deal from the owners' last proposal, you CANNOT underestimate what a huge concession it was for the escrow cap to be set at 10% with no additional retainage of salaries. Note that, while the players' % of BRI is dropping by about 12% (from 57 to ~50), the league is keeping the salary cap and luxury tax threshold artificially high (at last year's $58M and $70.3M, respectively) for the first two years of the new CBA. This means that player salaries will inevitably constitute far more than their allotted BRI share. Because neither the old or the new CBA allows the owners to take back any more than the escrowed funds to "re-calibrate" the BRI split in favor of the owners, this will in essence give the players a BRI split in excess of 50% for the first two years of the deal! There is no word yet on whether the owners will, in fact, be able to recoup that overage in future years, but even then, the players get what amounts to an interest-free loan of tens of millions of dollars. And that appears to be a worst-case scenario! I still think the players could have gotten this concession without blowing up the union had they played their cards right after Nov. 10, but this is a big win for them in an otherwise pro-owner deal that they knew was going to be bad no matter what happened.

Next year's free agent class could be a goldmine. A max player with a player option will opt out early to avoid the lower BRI cap of 49% and get a max based on the 57%. Rockets may not want to exercise their options on our young players, if the free agent market rocks.
