It sounds like you are fixating on solos where as you have to listen to the completeness of what Pete Townshend does. As Rimrocker noted he plays with excellent musicians in a way that makes everyone else better while not disappearing himself.

If you are just listening to solos I agree Townshend isn't as much of a soloist as the other's you name but what he does in many ways is harder than just cranking out a hot solo and then just hanging back playing rhythm.

You say this right after quoting me saying something totally different - color me confused. If I were fixated on soloing, I wouldn't have mentioned how his rhythm skills don't measure up to other well-regarded rhythm/accompanist guitarists. I agree that creating a good accompaniment can be more elusive than a solo, but as I pointed out previously, Townshend isn't among the best at this.

I would argue that both you and rimrocker are wrong - it's not his guitar playing that makes everyone better. Rather, it's his songwriting and his good sense to stay out of the way of a hyperactive rhythm section. That makes him a great musician (which he is - no argument) but not necessarily a great guitarist.

Look, I'm not saying Pete Townshend sucks. I really like a lot of Who songs, I love the tones he gets out of guitar, and he's a rock icon. I'm just saying he's not top 10 - and that's because he isn't.

    What a bunch of pointlessness.

YOU dig who you dig. There are a million hugely gifted shredders on the planet including a bunch of teenagers that hold their own with the old masters.

It's an exhibition, not a competition.

and if you did kill me dead w/ your super-knock out thunder-punch you better hope the judge is a clapton fan. we like our violence here in texas, but a tasteless joke about an overrated limey guitar player will not qualify as justifiable homicide...not even in williamson co.

Tasteless joke- yes, a joke about his 5-year old kid falling to his death. Have you ever lost a kid? Have you? Do you know what it's like? Of course not, because if you did, you wouldn't make a joke like that, you gutless puke. And I never said anything about killing you, idiot- the phrase "dead in the face" is an idiom that does not equate to death- but it doesn't surprise me that you're stupid enough not to know that. You know, like when someone says someone else is 'dead right" they don't mean that they're dead, moron.

Again, with all due respect, f**k you.

Another guy that should be mentioned is Brian May from Queen. That guy was great. He could shred!

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Edge. As a non-guitar player, his style has always struck me as unique and compelling. Does he use too much other equipment to achieve his sound to be considered one of the best? I really have no idea.

The Edge is probably one of the 2 most influential guitarists over the last 20 years (the other being James Hetfield). He's great at creating textures, but he is somewhat of a one-trick pony (as is Hetfield for that matter) who never turns off his delay pedals. But he's an important guitarist by any measure.

That's cause he has some tech do it for him, the guy has like an infinity number of pedals and never touches one! That said, his influence and his band as being a proto-typical mold for so many bands that I love cannot be overstated.

Look, it's Hendrix and no one even in the same universe. Turn off the lights and go home. Band of Gypsies Live at the Fillmore NYE-Machine Gun. /end of.
