Be polite and get out unscathed while avoiding a "none of your business" or "at least I love my job, not the money" answers. DONE.

My suggestion to you.....is to start drinking heavily.


Seriously, just keep your sense of humor about it and laugh it off. That's about all you can do while dealing with family during the holidays.

And again.....alcohol helps. It was my savior last Christmas....

 

Tell them you are turning out future engineers, doctors, dentists, lawyers (maybe not!) et al...

Then just sigh and say "Someone's gotta do it!"

 

Politely and firmly inform your parents that they are making you feel uncomfortable and that you will start spending your holidays elsewhere if the disparaging remarks don't end immediately. Make yourself perfectly clear on this point. Also, don't bring your siblings into it. Do not put them in the middle.

 

Just tell them that if it wasn't for people like you, their little angels wouldn't BE doctors, or engineers. As an engineer, I can tell you that if it wasn't for my teachers and professors encouraging me, and helping me throughout school and college, I certainly wouldn't be where I am today. Teaching is a noble profession, and it's definitely nothing to be ashamed about. They can **** themselves if they feel otherwise.

 

I like to turn stuff like that around and make it into an awkward joke where their lives are the punchline.

 

Those that can't do, teach, and those that can't teach... teach gym.

 

i know what you mean. i'm constantly asked when am i getting married and what about kids. i just say i already have a love in my life and that's all that matters and why would i want to be miserable and broke.

 

Tell them everybody have important role in society and because of people think like them we have a ****py education system. But there no other way around it. you can find ways to dodge it but they going to come after you like hyena.It's time to stand up for yourself. Shallow people prey on the weak to feed their ego. it doesn't give them right to project that crap on you unless you let them.

 

Bleeding Red is right. you have stand up for yourself. you don't need to justify your career choice. how does what you do for a living negatively affect them? it doesn't so they shouldn't worry about it.

People like to compare, even those who are nice. Hubris is a mighty thing. I would just return the favor and just do a re-direct back to them and ask them about themselves.

By the time they finish talking it'll be time to leave.

 

you are letting your insecurities about the fact that you are still in the closet cause the anxiety. just open up and let them know you are a raging homo and all should be fine.

 

just lie to them, like you said, it's only once a year

 

make a joke about it. enlighten the table. show that their constant interrogating isnt getting to you, and most importantly show that you are proud of being a teacher.
