I don’t like the Modern warfare games I prefer CoD: W@W and black ops. But I’m seriously looking into BF3 how does it compare to black ops. Thanks.

i was pissed at first but playing conquest with friends makes it so much fun. especially when you team up with complementary classes. I find it hard to bring a squad of more than three on a server though.

I played my first multiplayer game earlier today, I chose to be in the recon class and for the majority of the time I ran around the huge ass map while everyone else had fighter jets and choppers. I tried to camp to snipe but I rarely came across any one else not in a vehicle. Where is the AI bots to make the matches complete??

The thing is that, like the last game, there are vehicle-heavy maps, as well as maps with little or no vehicles. You just have to pick the right class for the right situation, and not getting your heart set on playing a certain way. I often run through all four classes over the course of a map. And in vehicle-heavy areas, either use a vehicle yourself, or pick the Support (C4) or Engineer (rockets, including the homing anti-air variety), and you should be fine.

I will admit that I tend to enjoy the more infantry-heavy maps more, though. Vehicles can sometimes get tiresome.

If people aren't downing vehicles quickly then your team is doing something wrong.

Found some info about weapon damage:

    https://docs.google.com/a/cst.edu/s...E0bjBueWVSQjc0V0E&f=true&noheader=false&gid=0

Unlike the great BFBC2 damage charts, these numbers weren't taken from the game code itself... they were found through people testing the guns in multiplayer mode. Ergo, values may not be exact, but they're pretty darned close.

The link will take you to a display of bullet damage per shot (out of 100 soldier health) shown at various different ranges, from 1 meter to 40 meters (or up to 100 meters for sniper rifles). There's another useful tab at the top called "time to kill"... this will show you how many seconds it takes to kill someone, taking into account both the gun's damage-per-bullet and rate of fire.

I'm a bit surprised that there isn't more difference in the weapon damage numbers. For instance, the Assault guns are really all the same, with the exception of the G3, which does greater damage but has a smaller clip (20 instead of 30). Likewise with the Engineer's weapons, where again the SCAR has greater damage in trade for a smaller clip. For Support, the PKP, M240, and M60 have a clear advantage over the other weapons. There's a bit more differentiation for the sniper rifles, PDWs, and pistols, so that info is worth looking into.

FWIW, I'm now rank 45 and I've unlocked all weapons except for the final three co-op weapons. Here are the guns I've settled on:

Assault: F2000 all the way. It can't attach an underbarrel grenade launcher, but I never use those anyway. Only annoying thing is that it has quite a long reload time compared with other assault rifles. But it has a high rate of fire and very little muzzle drift, making it great for mid-range.

Engineer: I'm still going back-and-forth between the A-91 and the G36, both are really good. I know a lot of people like the SCAR for the damage, but it also has more muzzle drift, and in this case I prefer a larger clip size.

Support: I thought it was going to be the M240, but I've actually settled on the M60. It has a much slower rate of fire (500rpm as opposed to 750rpm), but the power is still good, and because of the slower rate of fire I find it easier to control over long bursts.

Recon: I use a lot of weapons for the Recon. I use the SVD (semi-auto) most often with a 3.4x scope, where I go for consecutive body shots. At really long range I use the M98B for its relatively lower bullet drop. And if I'm just looking to set a spawn beacon and need a CQ weapon, I use the PDW-R with extended mag. However, I hear the PDW-R will have its damage reduced somewhat in the next patch (see the recent patch notes), so I may switch to the AS VAL, even though I really prefer to have 30 rounds instead of 20.

As far as sidearms go, I like the MP412 Rex (first weapon unlocked through Co-op). It has slightly less power than the .44 magnum, but it's also much easier to hit with on consecutive shots.

Haven't really experimented that much with the shotguns, not really my style.

As far as scopes go, I like the KOBRA for close range and the PK-A 3.4x for mid-range.

Hoping I can cop a 360 verison of the game Thursday or Friday. I'm a big noob to Battlefield tho. Only played the first one on the PC and the demo for BC2. How does the game work online? Like how you get weapons and certain rankings. What should I know before jumping online basically???

Know that rushing into the open will get you killed (most of the time).

The game seems pretty harsh at first, and you'll probably feel like you're just getting your ass kicked without getting any better for a while. It's sort of a steep learning curve.

The most important thing you can do to help yourself is learn the maps. When you first start you'll have no idea as a defender where all the attacking routes are, and on attack you'll have no idea where the defenders usually set up shop. It's going to take at least 10-15 hours of gametime before you start to feel comfortable with the ins and outs of all the maps. The best way to learn quickly is to join a squad that knows what it's doing and follow them around.

The other important thing is, of course, unlocking weapons and weapon add-ons. There are four different classes, and playing as a given class will gain you points toward unlocking weapons for that class type. Most of the starting weapons suck... the exception is the semi-auto snipers, which are good weapons that you'll probably keep using even after everything's unlocked. For the Assault, the M416 is the first gun you unlock and is a lot easier to handle than either of the two starting guns. The Medic starts with two LMGs that only have 45-round clips, but all other guns he unlocks have 100 (or 200 with extended mag) which makes a big difference. Remember to go prone and use the bipod whenever possible when using the Support class, as it drastically increases your accuracy. As for the Engineer, his starting weapons are actually okay, easier to handle than the assault guns.

Remember too that each individual gun has attachments that you can unlock. You get an attachment for a gun for every 10 kills with that gun up to 100 kills, at which point attachments come fewer and further between. But be sure to try them all out to see which ones work for you. There's a huge variety of scopes and other attachments that can drastically change how a gun behaves. Foregrips and laser sights are usually good choices for Engineer and Assault weapons, along with a short to mid-range scope depending on your playstyle. You'll want to keep the bipods for your Support guns, and probably take the extended magazine. For the snipers, I usually play with a bipod, a mid-range scope, and no third attachment.

You might want to try sticking with a class you like until you've got a few unlocks for it, and once you feel you've got a handle on that class, try another one. I almost always play more than one class on any given map depending on the situation, so you do want to try to unlock items for everyone eventually, but sticking with a single class just to start out can help increase your confidence and feel for the game.

Anyway, there's some basic info. I'm happy to answer any questions, though.

EDIT: Also, I just remembered, there are seven weapons unlocked through gaining points in the Co-op missions that can then be used in Multiplayer mode. IMO most of these aren't particularly worthwhile, but you should play the Co-op missions at least enough to unlock the first weapon, the MP412 Rex, as it's one of the better sidearms in the game. It's the one I've been using.

Haven't played COD yet, but my roommate brought home Battlefield last week. I tried it out and disliked it as much as all the previous Battlefield games. Too clunky and slow for me

^Hey thanks for the insight AP. What class you recommend to start with and what game modes are there? I know the maps can be big so what's a good game mode to get right into the action and also what about the vehicles?

I play Rush exclusively. That's just me, but I prefer it to the other multiplayer modes. Basically the attackers have to assault 4 different bases with 2 M-COM stations each, and they're allowed 75 deaths to take each base (at which point the kill count resets for the next base). If they take all the bases, they win. If the defenders kill 75 attackers before a base gets taken, they win.

As far as starting classes for n00bs go, Assault is probably the best because it's got good guns all-around, and because it specializes in staying alive. The Assault can throw out health packs that regenerate the health of teammates near them, and after getting a few thousand points, you get Defibrillators that can actually bring fallen teammates back to life if you reach them quickly enough. This is particularly helpful on offense, since the deaths of teammates you revive don't count toward your 75 total allowed deaths.

On defense, Support can be good because you can just find a good spot, set up your bipod and lay down a wall of bullets on anything that moves. And on offense or defense, be an engineer if there are enemy vehicles to deal with, since he has rocket launchers that'll help with that. The Recon might be more difficult to use at the beginning until you get some unlocks like a bipod and less extreme scopes.

As far as vehicles go... I don't use them much myself. The main battle tanks can be good for blasting the hell out of other vehicles, and if you're an engineer you get a tool that can repair damaged ally vehicles. I occasionally jump in a jeep just to get to an objective more quickly, but don't use them otherwise. I'm not good at flying helicopters, but I'll sometimes jump in one just to bail out and parachute in on an enemy base. I haven't even tried the jets, they're new since BFBC2, but I'm not terribly interested in them.

Damn sounds a little intimidating now. Kinda like when a buddies before tried setting me up on WOW. I just wanna shoot people online and not get my ass kicked to often. I was good at COD but stop playing for some reason. Tell me the equivalent of an COD M16 with stopping power on BF3 and how to get it, then I should be ok to start .
