I'm considering joining the military...not sure which branch yet. It's something I've always considered ever since I was eighteen and I even made a thread about it awhile back. I'm curious to everyone's opinion about the military and what their experience was like.

Go to college and get an ROTC commission. Barring that, join the Navy; I think with all the communications stuff they seem to have more technical career training.

If you want to put your life at risk, at least get paid. Go to Australia and become a miner, they pay $100,000 to start. After 5 years of experience its up to $200,000.

I've always wondered, what does it take to become the president's special service guys?

If possible, it's not the military, but try the CIA. I don't even know how they recruit but it seems more exciting than the military.

Loved active Navy, hated Navy reserves.

If your married, dont join any, period.
If single, Im quite sure navy visits most ports then you can start making babies in every foreign port.

If you dont like being away from mom and dad and significant other, dont join.

My wife is reading so I have to stop.....

My brother in law is in the Navy. He said things are very compact and it's something like six months on and six months off. Why would you recommend the Navy over the Air Force or Army?

Are you guys recommending the Navy because it's safer? I'm pretty sure with my asvab score, I won't have much difficulty finding a decent mos in the army/air force. When I spoke with a Army recruiter, they told me I was qualified to go airborne and join the Rangers. Now Rangers...that's something I'm pretty sure I don't want to do.

If you want to wear a uniform and march in formation, go back to high school and join the band.

At least when it comes to the "interesting" jobs in the CIA. If you want to be an accountant for the CIA, receive a MBA. If you want the "movie" jobs such as paramilitary officer then you need prior military experience... MARSOC( Marine Special Operational Command), SEALS, Delta etc... ).

I don't know about Presidential detail, but as Secret Service was Department of Treasury/now Homeland Security and has a pretty robust investigative arm; I imagine you get the same characters as you would for the FBI, which alot of times even includes JDs or just the same talent pool as all other selective government jobs.

Most everyone here is going to say avoid joining branches such as the Marine Corps or Army infantry. Sure life will suck for 4 years but hey at least I can say that I have free tuition and a housing allowance when I get out and extra benefits for receiving a purple heat. Basically unlike majority of 22 year old college students who rely on co-signed loans from their parents, I am fully independent.
