I know this isn't the point of your post, and I love VY, but, in no way, did he win that game singlehandedly. He was easily the best player on the field, but Texas' entire offensive line played in the NFL, as did the entire defensive backfield, tight end, a couple of the receivers, both RB's, and several other guys.
The Tebow thing has little to do with how they play. It has to do with them "Just winning games". The comparison doesn't exist outside the Texans fanbase, because other fans aren't constantly subjected to the whole "Texans would win games if they drafted VY because VY is a winner" BS. I'm afraid that if Leinart performs adequtely in Schaub's absence, and VY continues to win in Philly, we just might once again hear the comparison to Schaub again.
He accounted for 467 of the 556 yards Texas gained in that game. The defense allowed USC to gain 574 yards. That is as close to single handed as its going to get in football.
This is VY's 7th year. He looks like pretty much like the same QB he was in year 1. He can make some great clutch plays and late game drives, but he makes too many boneheaded decisions and weak throws. Some guys just don't change. (Actually, maybe most don't. Schaub's best QB Rating was in his 3rd full year as starter). I think VY is a career backup. But he's way better than Tebow, who won't even be a QB in a couple years. Why would teams risk signing VY when they could draft a guy who could potentially be the next Andy Dalton?
Huh? He looks nothing like he did his first year. 1st year: 66.7 QB rating, 12 TD, 13 INT, 51% completion %, 6.2 ypa, 500+ yards rushing, 6.7 ypc 5th year (last year): 98.6 QB rating, 10 TD, 3 INT, 60% completion %, 8.0 ypa, 125 yards rushing, 5 ypc Running became a much smaller part of his game, he stopped turning the ball over, he completed more and longer passes, and was far more efficient all around. Over his 5 years, his QB rating steadily improved and his running has steadily decreased. He plays nothing at all like he did his rookie year. His first couple of years, he relied on running and extending plays to open up the passing game. Last year, he almost exclusively played from the pocket - even yesterday, he had plenty of opportunities to run but he basically never did. In theory, the next step in his evolution is to learn how to mix in the running with the passing - that would make him far more effective as a player. Because you have the same likelihood of getting the next Matt Leinart or Jamarcus Russell or Colt McCoy. If you take a QB in the 2nd round, you never know what you're going to get, and if you pick a QB in the top 10, you're not taking some other great player in the top 10. Plus, you could probably pay Vince a lot less than you would have to pay a top 10 pick. You'd sign him for the same reason you sign Tavaris Jackson or Matt Moore or Donovan McNabb or Carson Palmer or Matt Hasselbeck or any other veteran quarterback instead of just playing whatever rookie you drafted.
This is like one of those D&D religious threads about abortion or gay rights. 2000 pages in, and everybody still has the same opinion as on page one, but they keep on arguing. If that isn't an exercise in futility of Sisyphean proportions, I don't know what is. I seriously believe that the person most hurt by the Vince Young worship has been Vince himself. And I won't say more (despite the fact that I would like to) as I don't want to rile up the faithful.
Well judging from this game, where he was making terrible reads and throwing wounded ducks before putting together an impressive 4th quarter drive, he's still the same. So far this year: 61.4 QB Rating, 7.0 y/a, 2 TD, 4 INT. Yes, that's a small sample size, but so is 9 games in 2010-11 where he threw only 156 passes and he seemed to have a limited playbook. McNabb, Palmer, and Hasselbeck have each put together MULTIPLE solid seasons. After 7 years, VY has not a single one. Furthermore, each of those guys put together very good seasons their 2nd year as fulltime starters while VY sucked his 2nd year. Matt Moore started the year on the bench. Nobody signed him to be a starter. It's only his 4th season so I guess there's hope for him. Tavaris Jackson is probably a good comparison to Young though. Tavaris had one year where he played 9 games and threw around 150 passes, just like Young. His QB rating was 95.4 But since then? He's been the same mediocre QB. It's been 7 years. How many QBs never put together a full solid season for 7 years and then all of a sudden are good?
you mean first real NFL game in a year? please dude, where was this for Carson Palmer who lost his first game back? I guess it's ok to be rusty if you aren't a Texas legend, but if you are, it's not ok.
I could care less about Carson Palmer. I haven't made a single post about him. If you want me to trash another QB though, I can tell you Tim Tebow sucks worse than VY. Actually I won't even say VY sucks, I just think he's mediocre. Tebow truly sucks.
the point is that a person who has not played in about a year get some slack for being rusty. Playing for a new team and new system. obviously does not apply in the clutchfan's "NFL" mind for native Houstonian QBs.
I don't even know what the VY/Texas Longhorn haters are arguing about anymore. He just won a road game on national TV against a team who was leading their division. That's real. All these stats and what if stuff, doesn't mean anything to the fans. Just like the Rockets, I don't remember what Mario Elie's stats were. I just remember the Kiss of Death. That's real.
Unfortunately we won't find out how much rust there was because Vick will probably come back and I don't see any team making VY their starter next year.
Not that you will care, but I did hear multiple Eagles fans call and complain about VY's performance today on Sirius NFL (a whole lot of "the only reason he was in a position to have to come back with a game winning drive was because he screwed up so much earlier in the game") so apparently some care.
