Nuggets guard J.R. Smith suffered what appeared to be a serious knee injury while playing for his Chinese team Sunday.

Smith signed to play for Zhejiang, a Chinese Basketball Association team, during the NBA lockout. Sunday’s game was the CBA regular season-opening game for Smith.

so if an agreement is reached soon between the trade association and the owners does that mean JR does not get paid do to non NBA basketball related injury? Or even worse, if he is not under contract that means he will not get a new contract and it looks like he will be paying for all his medical expenses.... unless the CBA picks it up.

I doubt we'll ever see the same JR again. Unfortunate, because he's only 26 & has been a human highlight reel during his first 7 years in the league. Very serious knee injuries are career-changers. Especially for an attacking swingman that relies so heavily upon his explosiveness... from 360 alley oops to jaw-dropping finishes in traffic, he's undoubtedly one of the most gifted athletes in the NBA. When he returns, he'll think twice before leaving his feet outside of the paint and trying to elevate over a defender for a flashy dunk.

He's got a place in Houston, and has spent many a summer absolutely lighting up Fonde. Get well, JR.

Unreal. This will cast a pale over the prospect of playing overseas for many of those players who were seriously considering it. I wouldn't be surprised if some changed their minds. While I'm not a fan of Smith, I hate to hear of serious injuries to any NBA player. OK, perhaps there are a couple, or three or four (or five) from the past that I would enjoy seeing hit by a bus while crossing the street, but in general, it's a sad thing. I hope reports that it was serious turn out to be wrong.

I can't even tell what happened. I was expecting him to land awkwardly or somehow get hit in the air, but instead, it just looked like he took a wrong step...

And the guy is a free agent? That's nuts. I wonder if his agent tried to talk him out of playing in China.

Feel bad for the guy, he is only 26 though plenty of time to come back when healthy.
