cormac mccarthy - blood meridian. the best book i have ever read. im into history, especially texas and mexico and old west history so people had been telling me to read it for years - when i finally got around to it i was blown away. when i finished the book i immediately went back to page 1 and read the whole thing again and actually enjoyed it more the 2nd time. its about a group of renegade texan scalp hunters working in mexico, collecting scalps for the mexican government. the f***ed up thing is that its actually based on a true story. and one of the characters, the judge, might be the most evil fictional character ever...i also have a theory that he is anton sigur from 'no country for old men'. i am almost done reading 'all the pretty horses' and as soon as i finish up the other 2 books from that trilogy im going to read 'no country'. mccarthy has like 12 novels and i plan on reading them all before moving onto anything else. his books actually end up creeping into my dreams. the part of 'horses' im reading right now is taking place in a prison in mexico and i dreamt last night that i was in prison...bizarre.
+1 Literally my favorite book. The Crossing (middle book of the border trilogy) is also phenomenal. I like his other books a lot, but those two are tops. The Road is also noteable. If you like Cormac, search for the blog "Yelping with Cormac" and read the best of posts.
Hard Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World A Wild Sheep Chase Dance Dance Dance start there and keep reading Haruki Murakami (most recent 1Q84) Coin Locker Babies by Ryu Murakami (no relation to Haruki) is excellent as well.
I still think The Wind Up Bird Chronicle is the best Haruki Murakami. My wife is almost finished with IQ84 so I'll start that when she's done. Also mentioned in this thread is Blood Meridian. Holy crap that's a great book (partial-fiction).
If you want some recent stuff, I recommend The Postmortal, which is about what happens when a cure for aging is created. The Magicians and the Magician King are awesome. It's sort of like Harry Potter for adults.
