Cuttino Mobley has not played in the NBA since 2008, but he wants back in. He’s worked out for teams but nothing has come of it.

He retired after being traded to the Knicks (in the Zach Randolph deal) in 2008. In a routine post-trade physical it was discovered Mobley had hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, the same condition linked to the deaths of Reggie Lewis and Hank Gathers. The Knicks wanted him to walk away from basketball because of it, and Mobley did after an 11 year career.

When he first retired Mobley didn’t complain, in fact he said the MRI “saved his life,” but that tone had changed by last year when Mobley was saying that the Knicks forced this decision on him when he didn’t want it.

Now he has taken the next step and sued the Knicks, tweets Howard Beck at the New York Times.

The Knicks responded, here is Beck had that as well:

This was Mobley’s quote last year.

“At first I was cool with it because I didn’t do research on it, but then doing research and getting different opinions, then I became upset because the corporation, the big company trying to get as much money as they can and do different things like that, for me I don’t think that was right,” Mobley said.

“You either waive me, you don’t take me in, you let me go somewhere else, let me create my own destiny like I did in 1999 when I came to the Rockets. Let me create my own decisions. Don’t make the decisions for me, clogging my heads with different things.

“I’m not upset now because I know it’s a business and that’s how they treat it as a business, but it’s two and a half, three years I haven’t played. It’s been a waste.”

Great, now we have another NBA player and issue headed to court. It’s kind of hard for this layman to see how the Knicks are at fault here. Then again, I think if you buy hot coffee in a drive-through and spill it on yourself you can’t sue saying it was hot. I’m crazy that way. Who knows how this really turns out.

    Shady

It makes me wonder if the Knicks already knew about Mobley's medical condition and traded for him intending for this scenario to happen to save money. They were hurting from Isaiah Thomas's mismanagement and needed ways to reduce salary. Seems pretty shady to me.

I hope Cuttino wins this lawsuit.

Cuttino...you are being paid....why are you whining about not being allowed to play basketball?

Cuttino is just another greedy millionaire player who should let his billionaire owner f!ck him in the ass, and take away his biggest passion in life. Owners need write-offs. Cuttino is too stupid to understand the business side of this.

"The Knicks' actions effectively deprived Mobley of the ability to play professional basketball, not only for the Knicks, but for the rest of his career," according to the complaint.

....Actually there was a big Chinese offer (as well as an Italian one, I believe) but he rejected them.

Doesn't matter. Cat is just another whining millionaire who is lucky to be playing a game that he loves. He doesn't actually work...he plays a game. Us hard working middle class people who are suffering in this bad economy cannot relate. He is trying to sue his boss, just like the union is. He should feel lucky that he still got paid.

I hope the Knicks owner crushes him.

That's not like you to be anti-Cuttino, heyp. No more Cat sunshine? :)

Man ... nearly forgot about those days of Cuttino fans vs. Francis fans, the small battle leading up to the Great YOF War.

I really think you guys underestimate the work some of these guys do. You realize you goto work after college. These guys have been putting in hours, pracitcing adn training...no not playing, there is a big difference, since they were under 10 and when otehr kids were being normal and playing outside, they didn't take breaks and were traveling and focused on a craft. They became adults much longer and took their talents to heights and made plenty of sacrifices doing it. They have a small window to make income on all of this as well. Its a deal many would take, but its easy to overlook the price, sacrifice, time, work ethic that goes into taking their gifts to that next level.

I don't believe he is running out of money. If so, he needs to show us his books like the owners did.

That reminds me. Yao is still getting paid, too, right? And he is spending our money on getting a free ride to go back to school, because, obviously, he must be running out of money, and needs a new vocation.

Oh brother! If the Knicks didn't handle this in a way to insulate themselves, they deserve to lose.

    Mind blowing.

Thats good. More ex players, workers, anyone /everyone should start suing NBA teams left right and center (all teams except the Rox of course). Im sure there are more genuine cases of bad dealings from their old clubs. What happened to Dunleavy against Sterling?

Owners and NBA need to be pressured from every corner.
