On this date in 1960, Houston was awarded an MLB expansion franchise.

I'm a 4th generation Houstonian. My grandparents spoke of THIS DAY as the day when Houston became a "big city."

Holy crap, I love the 'stros.

It was a huge deal for my family, as well. Dad was a baseball fan (and a football fan, so we went to the first Oilers games in the old AFL), so we learned to love mosquito repellent. The damned things loved Colt Stadium!

I looked this up... the last game played there was on September 27, 1964. If it still exists, it's in Mexico. My understanding is that a Mexican minor league team bought the stadium, it was taken apart, and then put it back together south of the border, somewhere. I agree about the "big city" comment, Max. Houston had become a million people strong, or about that, and we got an honest to god National League team. The Oilers came first, but there was always a bit of a "taint" from being in the AFL, sort of like the old ABA, I guess.

It would be nice if the Astros could wear every uniform design they have had throughout the season. Maybe picking a different one for each home series.

They're actually doing that next year for the 50th anniversary of the team. They'll even where Colt .45s throwbacks for the first time ever.
