Sadly, they're replacing it with 30 Rock, which I also have a soft spot for, and which will also be destroyed going up against Idol and BBT. If only we could lead "Whitney" to the 8pm slaughter instead... I really can't complain, considering we're going to get more episodes of Community than we did of Arrested Development and Firefly put together, but thematically, I really hope they get a chance to do a 13 episode final year to try and wrap everything up, and see everyone off to graduation. Plus, I'd love to see the meta commentary on imminent cancellation from Abed. The show seems like it might thrive in a Friday night death slot, with a dedicated, technologically savvy fan base that doesn't need to watch the show live and will buy the boxed set whenever it's released. Alan Sepinwall has a theory that Community might have a little extra juice, since its got Sony in its corner, and Sony somehow wrung out 4 seasons of 'Til Death from FOX with even worse ratings than Community. One can only hope.
Disappointed to see Community benched but not altogether surprised. I always thought that 30 Rock would be the first of the shows in my rotation to get canned, but it looks like they'll outlast Community.
NBC was pretty reasonable with Chuck, another low ratings but cult favorite. Even if they end the show I doubt they'd fail to give it a proper sendoff.
I don't think anyone is really shocked by this... it's too much if a niche show to survive the ratings war. Plus it's been pretty hit or miss. Bummer. I'll miss Annie's boobs. Spoiler
Can believe they would choose Whitney over Community. I have never seen an episode of Whitney but doesn't it really suck? The only reason it's ratings are higher than Community's is that it's behind the Office and community goes up against BBT and X factor.
I tried to give the show a chance for the first few episodes, and I hated it. Then I happened to catch a full episode this past week while eating dinner and waiting for Parks and Rec. I still found it impossible to laugh at.
Whitney is pretty bad and brings nothing unique to the table. Oh and the laugh track is absolutely terrible for being taped "live". I think they toned it down but in the first episode it was literally laugh track every 5 seconds.
There's some hope that it might come back because Sony will give the show away so it has enough episodes for syndication. http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/20...for-a-til-death-style-miracle-renewal/110661/ http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/20...-rules-private-practice-adjusted-down/110412/ As for Whitney, hate the show, but apparently 1 million more people will watch it than community. Between this and the Republican candidates, I'm losing hope in the general public.... come on Man.
There's a petition going around to save community. All community fans should sign it! http://www.save-community.com/
Community was awesome the first season, but then they basically "gayed it up" waaaaay too much for it to be funny anymore. The whole bullcrap themes about "friendship" and crap are pretty lame. Hooray for modern family staying strong!
Not sure if was a petition but Chuck would've ended a couple seasons sooner if not for the fans, but they made more of a play at the shows lead sponsor, Subway.
I'm in the very small minority on this, but I actually don't mind Whitney. Then again, I'm pretty easy to please when it comes to sitcoms.
After 30 Rock, Community is NBC's 2nd best comedy. Alison Brie, Donald Glover, and Chevy are all great in it. All their other shows, imo, are crap. They bring a couple new shows on a year and they fail typically in a season. Community, while not getting extremely high ratings, has many loyal fans. Not to mention they have it on a bad night with Always Sunny, Big Bang, League. Try not to compete in the same time slot with one of the most popular tv comedies, big bang, and you wouldn't have as big of a problem.
Sadly, the premise of the show is extremely limited given their setting. If you change the setting you destroy your relation to the fans (See Weeds). The writers have been inventive in that sense, but they rely on a huge number of gimmick plots... For a while they were on fire (Modern Warfare, Zombie, etc). This season... I don't know, I couldn't really watch it anymore. It seemed boring and predictable. The dialog is still snappy and I do enjoy the characters but they've hit a wall. But don't mind me... I don't watch any TV comedies anymore for some reason. I can't find anything funny enough to suit me.
