What happens if/when Iran gains nuclear capabilities is speculative at best. The contention that the middle east gets stabilized is based on the assumption that gaining nukes will force otherwise hostile nations to deal with Iran diplomatically- a country like Israel, for example, may conclude that settlement expansion is no longer worth the potentially devastating consequences of Iran attacking them and become more active in working towards a peace agreement thats amenable to the Palestinians needs. Saudi Arabia may also work to develop their relationship with Iran and give more rights to their Shi'ite minority population. At this point, anythings possible. The alternative may be true as well, in that surrounding nations may begin to aggressively pursue their own nuclear ambitions. There's really no telling what will happen. A few things are for certain though. The more states that develop nuclear weaponry, the higher the possibility for nuclear war. It's virtually impossible to ensure that no states will enact nuclear weapons programs, and even if every country in the world rid their current arsenal, chances are another country somewhere would use it as an opportunity to build theirs.
i find this whole paragraph rather astounding- you apparently believe Iran bears no responsibility for its actions, and recommend other countries in the region acquiesce to nuclear blackmail. do you believe Iran deals with its neighbors diplomatically, or hostilely? if the latter, why should they be rewarded?
There was one major check on Iran's power in the region and that was Iraq. There could be no greater reward for them than the overturning of Saddam's regime. Heck of a job, bassie.
What? My post was in response to: It wasnt an attempt at justifying Iran's activities or supporting anything. As I said in my post, what happens if/when Iran get's nuclear weaponry is speculative. What I offered was a theory that some have made saying that multiple nations with nuclear capabilities balance each other out. I then cited two very practical examples in which Iran could leverage its military strength to achieve foreign policy objectives. Nations bullying other nations using their military strength is quite common in global politics and happens all the time. In fact, the majority of the time nations with military strength dont need to fight because weaker nations understand their capabilities (as in the case of the US).
Another thing that is certain as long as the US pursues nukes for just just and our buds policy and threatens to invade and or nuke "no option if off the table", other countries so threatened like Iran will try to get nukes.
