    In general terms:

Players - a bunch of guys that won the DNA athletic lottery who have been coddled and surrounded with Yes men, and hanger ons, their entire lives. Never having to take any riks with things handed to them - free meals, drinks, girls etc.etc...etc..

    Versus

Owners - Highly intelligent businessmen who have made risk vs reward decisions their entire lives, and have succeeded by being smarter than those they do business with on a day to day basis.

Yeah, I wonder which side is going to win...LOL..

I guess it'd be fun to watch a real live fantasy draft, but some teams would be screwed, and I hope any bad karma the Rockets have wouldn't come back to haunt them.

If the owners really hammer the players on the final CBA, what stops someone with global ambitions like Lebron going overseas for good or a decent amount of time?

The worse the CBA looks for players, the bigger the thread of foreign leagues luring NBA talent. Not just NBA scrubs.

I can't wait until every player is broke and living with their parents and start begging for any deal they can get. How funny would it be if the lockout lasted so long that LeBron had to retire with no rings?

Stern is basically calling the union leaders stupid....just called their rhetoric humorous.

THIS. And I wonder why NBA owners are despised. It's not like they get protection and bailouts from the government...It's their money at stake too. They are greedy, but at least their business is fair.

Now that we are here, I expect some publicly expressed anger from players who wanted a chance to vote. The stigma of not being hard-line will evaporate once it's clear the season is lost (or maybe sooner).

I'm loving the theatrics so far!

    Stern on SC:

Thanks for the time. Reaction to players announcement?

Well, actually, at a bargaining session in 2010, Kessler said to us, if they didnt get proposal they liked from us, they threatened they would disclaim and sue us. That threat has been ongoing until now despite NBA's good faith in bargaining. Players walked away from an offer that would not have a rollback, would have guaranteed contracts, avg player salary to mid 5 to between 7-8 over life of the deal but it wasnt to the liking of the players. We anticipated this. There is an NLRB proceeding. Frankly by this irresponsible action at this late date, Hunter decided to put the season in jeopardy.

    Cancelling more games?

Calendar takes care of itself. No idle threats. Its the very lawsuit Kessler brought against the NFL. We dont understand the strategy anymore. Mr Boies, who has been retained by the players, represented the NFL in the case out in Minnesota. It gets stranger and stranger. Chances of the season slipping away and players earning what they worked hard to achieve, its a tragedy.

How would you describe the advice they're recieving?

We had a revised proposal over a 2 1/2 year negotiating period. They decided that this was a good negotiating tactic. Thats all this is. You dont get the deal you want, you disclaim interest and sue. Its not gonna work. If they were gonna do it. they should have done it a long time ago. They're hellbent on self destruction.

Heads to the courts now. What do you do next?

I must say, when you negotiate for 2 1/2 years and get to where you are, thats a proposal that is ready to be voted up or down. What we do next, we put faith in the lawyers and they'll be guaranteed years of litigation. When someone says, what happens now? Lots of paychecks keep getting missed from players and their families. Union decided that the proposal would not be presented to membership and instead do what they're doing now. It is the nuclear winter of the NBA now.

    Split amongst the owners?

I would not say its big vs small. There are some owners that thought our offer was too much in favor of the players. I was confident that I could navigate to an approval if the union said yes. 2011-2012 season is in jeopardy. If I was a player in the NBA, I would be wondering what it is what Billy Hunter just did.

    ...

I'm not banking on anything. Franchises will be here and arent going away. Some careers will potentially end on this. Its all a negotiating tactic. Thats all this is. This sham of we're taking the union and it will become something else and we'll negotiate in court, its a big charade and irresponsible. To do it now, the union is looking to see if they can scare the NBA owners into something. That isnt happening.

Knowing the players will be losing paychecks, element of surprise here?

I dont think its resolve. Its bad advice. This will be a very unwise decision that will not be classified as resolve. Theyve been mislead.

    Finances and fan base-concerns there?

Fans can think we were very close and players decided to blow it up. I know they'll be angry with both sides. When there is a deal, we'll do what we can do to win them back. I wish the union hadnt done this. Their rhetoric is almost humorous.

As a fan and someone who protected this sport, how does this affect you?

I'm saddened. Its not to be. I'm disappointed. Having said that, we knew this was coming. We filed unfair labor practice charge. We're familiar with the playbook even if its poorly timed.

When can we look for you to cancel games?

Takes 30 days for us to go from now to a deal. We need a 30 days before we start. Our fans are smart. Now there is no one to negotiate with. Union isnt there. We wont be doing anything soon with respect to their lawyers.

This is something to watch out for...but really unless foreign leagues can offer huge contracts that rival the NBA then there is nothing to worry about.

Stern calls NBPA move "a big charade" and "irresponsible." He predicted the "nuclear winter of the NBA."

    ESPNSteinLine Marc Stein
Nobody blameless here. Stern squeezed & squeezed harder than had to. But even he asked: WHY didn't union do this in July when it had time?

    nuggetsnews Benjamin Hochman
Stern: "I'm saddened -- I was optimistic ... I'm terribly disappointed. But we're familiar with the playbook."
