Good for them for doing that. Clear them all out. Coach gone, Prez gone, VP gone, (then)GA gone.

A Patriot-News Special Report: Who knew what about Jerry Sandusky? There were many missed chances to investigate as early as 1995

A vast majority of posters in here said they would have done more. Yet amazingly, what amounts to at least 10 adults didn't do more.

McQueary tells PSU wideouts he's out as coach and in "protective custody"

    Published: Friday, November 11, 2011, 5:51 PM Updated: Friday, November 11, 2011, 6:12 PM

    By DAVID JONES, The Patriot-News

Penn State's deposed receivers coach Mike McQueary, today placed on what the school called "administrative leave," moments ago told his receivers on a brief conference call that he was in "protective custody" at a secluded location not in State College.

McQueary, witness to the alleged sexual assault of a 10-year-old boy in 2002 by Jerry Sandusky, has been the subject of physical threats. He is the key subject in further investigation into the scandal and potentially could be the single most important trial witness.

On Friday afternoon, according to two team sources, new receivers coach Kermit Buggs gathered his players in a room at the PSU football complex and allowed them to talk with McQueary on a speaker phone.

During a brief and emotional conversation, McQueary told them, “I wanted to let you guys know I'm not your coach anymore. I'm done.”

When players asked, "Coach, where are you? Can we see you?" McQueary responded, “No, I'm actually in protective custody. I'm not in State College.”

McQueary added that he was, "Double-fisting it," meaning he was having two drinks at once.

It was decided by school officials yesterday that McQueary would not coach in Saturday's game against Nebraska after he received threats./p

McQueary, 37, has been a full-time coach at PSU since 2004, specializing as the receivers coach and recruiting coordinator. He was the Nittany Lions' starting quarterback in 1997. He is married with a 2-year-old daughter.

Everyone here has expressed their strong disgust for the actions committed and responded with what they would do in a situation where they knew sexual abuse was taking place. These feelings are very much universal (save for the random sex offender) and are being echoed nationwide. Even the most cruel-hearted b*stard can can start seeing red over an innocent child being taken advantage of... and yet, ALL the people involved in this scandal did not feel the same way.

If the angry mob would take a second to put their pitchforks down, they'd see that this story doesn't make sense. The likelihood of so many people being certain of sexual abuse and not feeling the same level of disgust and outrage we all do is just absurdly low--it's not realistic. Sure, it's possible that maybe a couple of those guys would rather sweep things under the rug for the sake of the school, and by all means, they deserve all our vitriol... but all the information I've read so far seem to indicate that most of these people involved were of uncertain of what was going on. It's easy for us in hindsight to look at these diagrams and timelines and be baffled at what seems so painfully obvious, but as far as I can tell, most of these people were not privy to knowledge of prior events and were only left with a mere suspicion.

In these types of cases, the responsibility lies with the direct witnesses. Based on the conflicting stories in the McQueary chain, he possibly was uncertain of what he saw. What really sticks out to me is the janitor--he (apparently) clearly witnessed a sexual act and didn't go to the police?! That guy was gifted the silver bullet that is usually so elusive in tracking down sexual predators, and he did nothing with it. Based on what we know, the janitor should be getting all the hate right now, in addition to the actual predator (imagine that!). Instead, they've set up the symbolic old man as the fall guy since the media is calling for blood.

Anyway, who knows, by the end of this, maybe we'll find out that there actually was a deliberate cover-up, but right now, that seems far-fetched.

I think you'd be surprised. There's plenty of evidence that this kind of reaction does happen here and there, as crazy as it sounds. One of the best examples is the China 2 yr old incident from a while back. 2 yr old gets hit by a car, and *18* people standing around witnessing it do NOTHING to help the child. And there, there's not even any risk of getting involved in a crime or anything ugly - it's just a matter of trying to get help for an injured kid:

Certainly, a crazy number of things have to happen for this many people to ignore this, but it definitely can happen.

And that's in plain view of the public. This Sandusky stuff is happening in secret in a little isolated mountain town run by a football mafia.

hairyme, McQueary witnessed (heard and saw) a boy with his hands pinned against the wall getting raped by Sandusky. there is no chain of misinformation there. he could have and should have called the police.

why on Earth in Pennsylvania no one knows that when a naked man is penetrating a naked boy from behind, that is known as a sex crime.

as a mandated reporter myself having been to these types of trainings, you pick up the phone and file an anonymous report without question.

the janitors boss and plant manager should be implicated, and perhaps their complaints were swept under the rug by the school administration as you mentioned, but that doesn't excuse anyone...

How is Penn State going to "remove" itself from Joe? He basically "built" Penn State on the national stage. He built a library, part of a wing of a hospital there, provided thousands of scholarships with his own money, and so on.

It's a really tough situation for Penn State.

I am guessing most people wouldn't have done anything. If they did there is a good possibility they lose their cushy job and it is the end of the program. People know by buying certain brands they support and encourage child sweatshops, but they still buy it.

It's a sensitive subject, but it's amazing to me that everyone and their moms on national TV/radio are saying they would report it to the police without hesitation.

"end of the program" and "losing their job" should be the result of a society that wouldn't have done anything about a man raping a boy.

and you're dead wrong about what most people would do Air Langhi

Mc queary was concerned about losing his job? look where he's at now...
