Any recommendations or tips? or do you want to share any experience on this? Got some guests from the UK who wants to do deep-sea fishing here. Appreciate any help, thanks.
If you can afford to do so, a private boat with just your guests on board is the way to go. Choose this over one of the deep sea party boat trips, those while fun for what they are, are no where as nice as the private guided trips. I have no idea what charter to recommend in either case.
I have only been on the 12 hour and 60 hour Big E trips out of Freeport and I like the boat and crew. Are you looking for a party boat or a smaller private charter? Also depends on what kind of fish you want to catch (tuna, grouper, etc). You might also try 2coolfishing.com or 360tuna.com if you don't get many responses here.
Now is the time for inshore (bay) fishing...........not that you can't get some big fish (bull reds), but this isn't exactly the time Texas sportsmen are thinking about off shore fishing.
I am no expert angler, but in my experience, for what you want, you will probably be able to go a max of 30-50 miles (depending on boat) and will most likely catch some snapper, grouper if you are lucky, kings, and maybe some AJs. Boat will probably average around $1000++ plus fuel charges for an 8-12 hour trip. It has been a while since I checked prices, but that is what I remember. Prices might have gone up since then. If you want to catch some tuna, you might need to look at Venice, LA or a party boat like the Big E for an overnight type trip. I know on a recent Big E 60 hr trip, they were catching 150 lb yellowfin, which is a good size for our waters. My recommendation is that if ya'll are all new, dont have gear, dont know if you will get sea sick, you might want to consider a party boat. They are a little cheaper, bigger boat takes the seas better, more room incase someone gets sea sick. I reference the Big E a lot b/c that's the boat I have been on the most. I don't know when you are looking to go, but check out their site: http://www.underwaterexpeditions.net/ They have a calendar of their trips. They also offer private charters on smaller boats I think. There are some smaller boats that may offer overnight trips to extend your range, but I have no experience with them.
Tune in to Houston sports radio before 8AM on Saturday. It's one or two of the three. Learn all about fishin'
Since you can walk to Cuba with your head above water, is the term "Deep Sea" really appropriate near Galveston? Just sayin'.
DEEPwater Horizon Bob. There is a continental shelf out there. Check this out, it is a real ocean: http://flowergarden.noaa.gov/
I'm going to throw up just thinking about deep sea fishing. I hope non of your homies gets sea sick like me
LOL This is a funny response. I'm picturing some 40+ year old people from the UK that are going to be deep sea fishing.... and you refer to them as "homies".
yeah... this is why a private boat would be better. in my senior year of high school, my dad took me out on a huge boat with about 20 or so folks. we took off early morning and the waves were huge. it was seriously like a rollercoaster. when eating a sandwich for breakfast underneath the deck, i heard a splatter. i thought nothing of it until i looked down to take a bite out of my sandwich. there was vomit sliding back and forth on the floor along with the boat on the waves. disgusted, i tossed the sandwich in the trash and started walking up the stairs to get to the deck. once i get eye-level with the deck, i notice someone projectile puking over the boat railing. in short, the fishing trip sucked because it was a huge arse vomit fest that rivaled the blueberry pie scene in stand by me, the chewing tobacco scene in the sandlot, and the spinning ride scene in the problem child 2. yep... emetophobia. just make sure your buds take a schitload of dramamine before the trip.
