Well. The stories are not going to be heavily interconnected, at least I don't think.
And the setting will be in two entirely different places, but I would play Oblivion just to get a feel for the game and the vast landscape.

The main games are never related so there's no need to play any previous game, but as you said, Oblivion should provide him with the feeling. It's 20 bucks for the GOTY version with all add-ons and if he plays through it before buying Skyrim, he'll save a bit money.

Theres no way in hell that can happen.

I have read reviews of people who somehow got a copy early and they are basically blowing wads constantly for the last few days.

    MASSIVE. WADS.

Me too. Dragonage 2 was a huge letdown after the first one. Elderscrolls does have a longer track record, so I'll try not to be too pessimistic.

Does anyone else have veterans day off?

What a great time to have a holiday for me. I'm going to arrive at Best Buy at opening, and then spend the rest of the day diving in to Skyrim. I'm going to the grocery store today. I'll make sure I stock up on snacks and easy to prepare meals in anticipation of Friday's game release.

The only thing that could slow down my gaming is if my ball and chain has something planned or something I need to do.

I was debating Battlefield 3 or CoD:MW3. I forgot this was coming out Friday. So now I'm getting this one instead. I don't think I'll be coming up for breath for an entire month so I can look at those other games later.

I wish they would've released this on December 11th instead of November 11th. I have most of December off. lol. Definitely getting it and praying it's not buggy.

I thought I read something about a day 1 patch being prepared...so seems like there were some bugs. Hopefully all major issues patched on release-day, and only minor issues (if any) remaining.

I don't think I'll be picking this up right away, so I'll probably miss any bugs/issues (either Bethesda will fix them or the community will).

edit: Actually, the patch is already available. Hmm...OK.

    that's odd.

I'm so used to seeing the initial announced release date change and the game still has some bugs, but this release date has remained the same for so long I was hoping things were going to be relatively smooth on the bug front. Most of the Elder Scrolls games have some bugs early on that get fixed along the way.

But you also have to include the fact that Bethesda bases its games off of completely dynamic variables. Now, you can literally do anything and still be able to complete quests (thus removing "essential" characters from the game).
Something like that is bound to be buggy.

From their history it would be silly to assume otherwise. Everyone knows they make great games but are very buggy early on.

This is why I'm scared to buy it the day it comes out, but I think I will. If I find it's buggy, I'll just wait for patches, I guess. I just hope there aren't any main quest/plot/game killer bugs.

I remember there being a lot of bugs in Fallout where it can completely kill your quest story line and make it impossible to advance... That is why I will save multiple multiple times!

...but seriously, I'm not gonna get it at launch. I'm done getting these games at launch. If you wait... 1) they'll have worked out the 10 million bugs, 2) there will be many more worthwhile community mods, 3) you can get the inevitable GOTY Edition with all the DLC included.

I think they're including the "Creation Kit" with the game at launch, so if worse comes to worst, you could maybe patch it yourself (depending on bug). I had to do that with Oblivion. IIRC, some NPC bugged out and wouldn't give me a quest item I needed. I just used the editor to drop that quest item in the building I was in and continued on with the quest. Kind of sucks, but if you're 40 hours in and have no other way of fixing things...

Of course, only works if you have the PC version. But why would you play on anything else? [/PC Master Race]

You gonna wait 12+ months just for the GOTY version? I'd die.

Well, for one, it may not take even 12 months. For Oblivion they only took 6 months to release the GOTY version (hence my feeling extra-stupid about it).

But even assuming it'll be 12+ months, you can't even fathom how big my backlog of games is. I could probably fill a swimming pool with it.

I'm almost grateful for the reprieve, especially knowing I probably spent 300+ hours on the last 2 Elder Scrolls games.
