The quote above had me thinking which strategy is better? I think deferring is usually better because you get a feel of what the opponents strategy is and you can game plan for it better during the half.
i prefer to defer but if we're going to score a TD on our first drive every time then i'd rather receive.
Id rather go on defense first. The way our D has been playing, chances are we get a solid stop on the first drive. And then we get the ball to start the 2nd half. Then again, if youre going to score on your first drive every game, then its better to receive. Im confused now.
You choose whatever would give you the most momentum to start the game, i.e, receive if your offense is better, defer if your defense is better. In the Texans' case, I'd prefer to receive, since we're such a good first half offensive team. But to be honest, I don't think it really matters that much.
you only defer if you're playing an away game in the middle of a storm with winds blowing 3,000 miles per hour or have a foot fetish.
Depends on if you're a power bottom or not. Power bottoms generate all the power. Speed has everything to do with it.
If we can see ridiculously perfect opening drives like in the Saints game, I want them to receive first all day. Drives like that can take the wind out of their sails. I don't know if Kubiak still scripts his first series but they usually start out with more passes now and it's been looking good.
I always felt that the traditional way of playing it was to defer at the beginning of the game, receive in OT (obviously). But the way the Texans start out games, it should be receive, receive, receive all the way.
When our offense is as good as it is in the first half, I'd rather receive. Plus, you have a better chance at wearing down the opposing defense as the game goes along since we'll have at least one extra offensive possession.
...now that I think about it, it doesn't necessarily mean we'll have an extra offensive possession. But offense does the scoring (majority of the time) so you can create momentum at the start of the game if you are able to score on the first drive.
Receive, because the Texans tend to have their best drives at the opening and many of them last at least 5 minutes.
