Yes, I'm sure those 2 games made it impossible to schedule a series with SMU/TCU/UH for the rest of the decade.
and utep doesn't count. but aggie gets credit for scheduling smu (omg, they're so awesome!) instead of sfa.
of course they didn't...but they cut the legs off an argument that somehow UT is scared to schedule good OOC opponents.
THIS. Donny, you make it seem as if powerhouse programs play other good non-conference in-state programs on a regular basis (besides rivalries). Just a few that I can think of: Florida vs South Florida: 1 time (2010) Florida St vs South Florida: 1 time (2009) Ohio St vs Cincinnati: 6 times ('19, '31, '99, 02, 04, 06) But feel free to continue singling out the Longhorns in your diatribes. You say we don't schedule UH, but UH hasn't been consistently "legit" since 2 decades ago. Since the days of SWC, UH has compiled a record of 85-96 through 2010. SMU is 61-115. Rice 71-100. TCU is the only legit program during this period at 128-55, and UT played them in '07. Did I miss any other legit teams in the state of Texas?
That wasn't really my point. Besides, they're not mutually exclusive of each other. If you're playing at Ohio State one week, then hosting Wyoming the next week... that doesn't do a whole hell of a lot to defend the argument that they'd be willing to play a decent local OOC team.
1) Why would I bother singling anyone else out? Does that concern me, or anyone else in here? I'm guessing not. So I'm probably not going to bring it up. (P.S. All of those programs suck for doing the same thing) 2) Oh please. You missed the point entirely. As if Wyoming, Louisiana Lafayette, etc. pose as much of a threat as TCU/UH. And I've already explained how playing TCU was basically a cash grab for UT at TCU's expense.
I wouldn't give A&M credit for agreeing to do a home and home with A&M-Corpus Christi, either. It's the football equivalent of masturbation, playing with yourself.
What IS your point though? Texas has been willing to schedule difficult OOC games. And they've been willing to schedule Texas OOC games. They scheduled TCU once, so they weren't ducking good Texas OOC games. They won't play UH because of the stadium fiasco. SMU hasn't been good until the last year or so, and these schedules are made years in advance, so if they had played SMU a few years ago, it would have been no different than playing Rice all the time.
again..why are they obligated to play a decent local OOC team? they're just not. they recruit against local universities...why would they want to give those schools the big stage that comes with playing UT? if they weren't scheduling anyone of any consequence at all OOC, i'd see the argument better. but they do.
It's not the programs suck. It's what makes the most SENSE to a program. Sports isn't a charity. Every game you play needs to be about 1) money 2) poll ranking and 3) exposure. Programs have the freedom to schedule the games, and they'll do what makes the most sense. Don't hate the players, hate the game. Referring to the above response, scheduling instate school breaks even on points 1 (maybe) and 2, and fails at point 3. Sure, if you're a OOC program in Texas, you'd want to play UT, but the feeling isn't reciprocated for good reasons.
I don't see why UT needs to schedule OOC/Texas games they were already playing the best Texas teams in the big 12 or atleast the teams that people care about......... They should expand their name on a national stage which is what they did with a few of their OOC games..............
Go back and read the thread. Yeah, every once in a good while. LOL, sure. Fair enough about Rice/SMU, but I think the stadium excuse is lame sauce now. Let it go, Deloss.
Did I say they were obligated? No. Can I call them out for not doing it? Sure. Can you say they're not afraid or that they'd rather go chase money? Sure. And round and round we go. Pee pee games, woot. There have been some questionable OOC slates in there, man. And like I said, the perfect is not the enemy of the good. Simply because you schedule Ohio State twice doesn't mean you're absolved from any criticism about bringing in Nevada Technical School for the Blind.
i really don't give a **** who ut plays. now that my school is movin' on up, i'm way more concerned about giving the spartans and vandals the business rather than arguing that playing at utep isn't really playing an in-state school.
I get all that, but in the end, I retain my right to play peepee games and say they should play local teams (that actually pose a threat) even if it means they might lose once in a while and/or not pull in a few extra thousand dollars.
