It depends on the kid. Some grow up to be strong and independent adults with inane levels of discipline. Some grow up to be insecure and shattered.
That has nothing to do with the kid. It has everything to do with how the parents administer/justify the punishment.
Yeah, I don't see what the big deal is. When I was a kid, my mom used to kick me in the face with a metal boot when I refused to eat my vegetables. Then she would hogtie my hands and feet and lock me in a dark closet full of hungry rats for weeks at a time. My dad used to pistol whip me until I passed out, then wake me up and start all over again. He would beat me to within an inch of my life and bound and gag my mom and make her watch. I suffered no emotional scars whatsoever. I'm actually a better man for it.
I'm not defending him. I'm just saying how kids react differently to beatings. Regardless, its a backwards tradition that needs to be stopped.

I know. And you're wrong. A kid reacts differently to beatings based on their parents, not on some arbitrary emotional stability inherent to their psyche. i.e., folks in this thread (right or wrong) are saying they had similar beatings and feel they grew from it. Others think they suffered similar abuse. The difference is in how the punishment was administered, and why it was/was not justified.
My step father tells me how my grandfather gave him and his brothers a spanking when they did something really bad and that they probably deserved it. There was 4 boys and 1 girl. In the same sentence he always mentions how my grandfather never once laid a hand on his daughter regardless of what she did. No matter how bad she was her punishments dealt with being grounded and doing more chores around the house. He never laid a hand on his daughter. That is how a real man disciplines his daughter. This judge is a POS.
My aunt turned out perfectly fine without getting beatings. I have a daughter myself and I can't see myself ever laying a hand on her. My wife won't hesitate to slap her when she is older though. Even still if you are a man that has a daughter and love her I don't see how you could hit her much less beat her the way this judge did.
