Those ridiculous part of that sequence was when they discussing how many shots they had left, and when they each replied with a small number they both gave a look as if to say "alright we better make them count." Then all of a sudden they are basically blindly firing into the hoard. I would imagine it's more beneficial to save the bullets for when the zombies are actually close and have a hold of you or if you are cut off by one and need to clear a path with a head shot. Not randomly picking off 1 out of 35 following you
Well they had time to stop running and talk to each other for a moment or two. I have one bullet. I have one bullet too! I'm sorry. Sorry for what? Bang! Then they wrestled on the ground for a few minutes while fat guy tried to keep Shane from leaving him and Shane had to bludgeon him AND get his pack off. Then Shane started running and managed to turn around before fat guy was getting eaten and watched him for a moment. So no, I don't believe that if they had dropped the packs and just run they would have both died. Heck, the way it was shown on tv there is no reason to think they couldn't have made it together.
I'm looking for clarification on something from the last episode. When Shane and Otis are on top of the bleachers, Shane suggests they escape through the windows near the top of the gymnasium. Otis replies by saying that he's too fat to fit through them, and that he'll go through the locker room instead. So, why exactly could they BOTH not go through the locker room? Aside from the fact that the writers needed to create a way for Shane to hurt his ankle/leg in order to set up that final Shane/Otis scenario.
The implication was that Otis didn't have much of a chance to make it out the way he was going. Shane was surprised to see him still alive. Shane getting out through the window was entirely possible because fat guy ran to the lockeroom and got chased by most of the zombies. The whole points was he might not make it. That's why Shane took both packs at that point, so he and the supplies could survive and get to the boy.
Hmm...I may have to watch that part again, but it seemed like the path to the locker room was pretty wide open, and I don't remember any implication that going that way was a death sentence. But I'm also of the opinion that splitting up is never a good idea unless absolutely necessary. If I were Shane I would have gone with Otis for sure.
Seemed liked Otis' run to the locker room gave Shane the chance to escape. I don't see how either of them would have survived had they stayed together at that point. One would have to draw the pack away. The amount of time it took him to wrestle the pack away from Otis and for the zombies to reach him, it seems entirely plausible they both make it. What's interesting is that until that point, Shane seemed pretty concerned for Otis' life. He could have shot him a lot sooner than that, but I guess it wasn't until that point where he truly felt he wasn't gonna make it and did what he did.
Like I said, I'll have to take another look at it...but going on my mental picture, it seemed like they both could have run straight for the locker room and been fine. Shane was already up on top of the bleachers (presumably safe from the horde), so I don't see how Otis running in the opposite direction did Shane any good in reaching the window.
To get to the windows they had to get off the bleachers they were on. Otis running the way he did drew the horde away and allowed Shane to jump off the bleachers he was on and go up the other bleachers to get to the window. He couldn't have done that without Otis drawing the horde away. Additionally, the only reason Otis made it is because he wasn't carrying the packs while running from the horde. That's why Shane took both.
A bigger question is why they opened the door to the trailer wide open and stormed out with all the zombies around and why they didn't bother to save anymore flares.
I just watched the scene again, and I stand behind my original assessment. The only reason Otis went the other way was because "there are windows in in there too, and they're more my size". Well if they're his size, then they're big enough for both of them, so Shane going the opposite way became totally pointless. The pathway to the locker room was basically clear, and the only reason Otis had trouble getting there at all was because he (predictably) hurt himself jumping down from the bleachers. If Shane had hopped down with him, he could have helped him up and/or covered for him just the same as he did from the bleachers. All indications are that they would have been fine. Basically, the writer's needed a way to injure both guys without them being bitten. That way they could set up the slow escape which allowed the final Shane/Otis scenario to play out. Lazy writing.
Was Otis all that injured though? Cause he hopped and fell, and a zombie grabbed him. I didn't see him really limping, just moving slow cause he's big and winded. He at least didn't hurt himself as bad as Shane.
But you do see that Otis going through the locker room cleared the way for Shane right? I don't think they would have made it if both went through the locker room and am surprised that Otis actually made it. I mean, he had to go into the locker room, open the window, AND escape all with zombies chasing him. I agree though that their dialogue made it seem like Otis just needed a bigger window.
There's been a couple moments of lazy writing on this show but this isn't one of them. Like others have pointed out, if they both headed off towards the lockers there wouldn't be anyone to cover/distract. Otis going off on his own meant Shane could provide some cover while Otis left, and Otis leaving drew most of the zombies away from Shane, clearing a path for Shane to get down from the bleachers and over to the windows.
The whole plan was **** form the beginning. Did they think the zombies would just go away when they came back out of the trailer? Even if they saved flares, where are you going to throw them from the trailer without the zombies seeing you? If anything one stays behind the car and the other one goes and gets the medicine. He would still need to give the other guy a sign and he couldn't do that without opening the door. It would have to be timed. Shane's not a villain. 3 people would of died as opposed to 1.
This still doesn't make sense. The pathway to the locker room was more or less clear (go back and look), and had Otis not fallen and hurt his ankle, no zombie would have ever gotten close to him. You won't believe me unless you go back and look for yourself, but Otis was on the ground for 10 full seconds before Shane even took one shot to provide cover for him. If Shane and Otis jumped down together, even if Otis fell, they could have been on their feet and through the door a hell of a lot quicker. It was maybe 20 feet away with no zombies in front of it..
I just got into this show last week and wow I'm addicted. It's rare a watch non comedies but this show is amazing.
