I'm bad about snacking right before bed, but I usually keep it to a small amount of fruit, some yogurt, or milk and a handful of vanilla wafers. None are particularly good right before bed but I don't go overboard. If you don't eat for 5-6 hours before bed and sleep 7-8 hours, that's 12+ hours without food. Is that really recommended (especially if weight training)?
that guy doesnt know what hes talking about. mixed nuts (light/no salt) fruit/vegetable (raw broccoli keeps full) protein bar nature valley bars with peanut butter on top notice no bad carbs or sugars.
To be fair, a lot of protein bars (at least the ones that taste decent) have sugar alcohol instead of sugar. The most common sugar alcohols are nearly as bad as sugar. DonnyMost is wrong about the time frame, but right about not eating sugars and starches before bed. If I get a craving before bed, I usually go for a little bit of peanut butter or a small amount of lean meat that I have left over from a meal. Someone already mentioned it, but kale chips are also a good choice. They taste surprisingly good, depending on the seasoning you use.
If you're trying to bulk, obviously not. It's not as if you burn a lot of calories when you're asleep, and you should be hungry when you first wake up and eat a big meal to kickstart your metabolism.
Are kale chips available at grocery stores like Kroger, HEB, etc? Or are they only at places like Whole Foods? Also, I like Nature Valley Granola Bars - Peanut Butter flavor - for a snack between meals. I eat both bars, but sometimes I can do just one. Is this food bad? I also want to incorporate almonds as a snack between meals. They're so high in fat, but I see them on everyone's good-snack-list. Are all almonds good? Because I would gladly eat the flavored almonds from Blue Diamond if they were just as healthy as natural almonds. Not sure what portion to eat with almonds either. They're healthy, but the fat is pretty high. Help?
my go-tos to subside late night cravings are: bananas casein powder + skim milk fat-free cottage cheese + splenda
Those granola bars and things like Nutra Grain bars are highly processed and very high in sugar/carbs and saturated fat in comparison to any nutritional value. I wouldn't say they are pure junk but they aren't really good either. The fat in almonds is good fat. The primary fats you want to avoid are saturated fats. Those flavored almonds are probably pretty high in sodium...I go with "roasted, no salt" almonds.
Taco bell. You'll probably **** out half your body weight if you're not used to eating it. Of course, if you are used to eating it, you have bigger problems.
