Ha, who knew (besides you, of course). Always thought they were Ranger-lifers. I guess they're lifers in the Bagwell is an Astros-lifer sense.
LOL...I meant considering payroll, division and where they came from. Lot of love for Cashman, Theo and Amaro Jr. but those guys have massive payrolls to work with...and nothing against those guys either because they've built great organizations from top to bottom but think Daniels given his situation has done a bit better. Friedman is the one guy I'd say is at his level right now that has a strong argument but hard to argue with back to back AL pennants while having the best farm system in the game.
DFW owns Houston now. Cowboys, enough said. Granted the Texans are the newest expansion franchise. Mavs, defending champs. Rockets are starting over. Rangers, 2 time defending AL champs. Astros are the worst team in baseball.
He meant on the field/court, though the Texans are clearly better than the Cowboys this year. He didn't mean that DFW teams owned our market.
erm, Houston smack talk right now? not so much. but, but, but, our TEXANS are going to finish over .500 this year and win the division!!!!!1 (...over... three teams with losing records...) Let's face it: they got their NBA title, they got to two WS, back-to-back even, and the Cowboys still have Lombardi trophies laying around all over the house. We're going to have actually win something or just shut up.
5 years ago the astros made 2 deep playoff runs, and the rangers sucked. The Mavs were the worst franchise in basketball in the 90's The cowboys haven't done anything of note in 15 years These things are cyclical, Ive never been one of the dallas haters but crap like this makes it hard. They got two of the best organizations in sports right now, it won't always be that way. From 1992 to 2006 the Astros only had one losing season, people are so quick to ignore this.
The extended success the Astros enjoyed is part of what makes their current reality so painful. We were a model organization for over decade!! How'd we manage to foul it up this dramatically???
is there some kind of deadline today for the deal to be done or they can look for another buyer? maybe tomorrow
http://www.foxsportshouston.com/10/...anding_astros.html?blockID=592896&feedID=3548 Next month in baseball will end Astros sale saga October 30, 2011 As November nears and the Jim Crane/Bud Selig saga nears its end, there is still no clear picture of how this months-long squabble will be resolved. While Crane and Major League Baseball have discussed and negotiated a compromise where Crane would get compensation for moving the team to the American League, there's no agreement. In fact, sources close to the situation indicate that the two sides are so far apart on compensation there's a chance no deal is struck by the end of November, when Crane's contract to buy the team expires. Baseball's owners will meet November 15 and 16 in Milwaukee and those dates loom large for Crane and his group. The meetings will serve as a chance for Crane to meet with Selig again as well as other owners. It will come down to this: Can all the parties agree on adequate reimbursement for Crane to switch leagues? If Crane does end up with the team on the condition that the Astros become members of the American League West, it will be a long, long wait before fans can hope to have a contending team. The AL West includes two of the best organizations in baseball: the Rangers and the Angels. Each organization has talent up and down the minor league system and each club is willing to spend plenty of money to fill in the gaps with free agents. Add to this the fact that the Junior Circuit simply has more good teams and it will be a long, long road back to the post-season for the Astros. Playing the Yankees, Red Sox, Angels, Rangers and Rays more often will only make it tougher for the Astros to become competitive again. The alternative to the above scenario is that Crane is ultimately not granted the team, meaning current owner Drayton McLane is stuck with a rebuilding project he didn't choose and does not want. McLane would not have traded both Hunter Pence and Michael Bourn had it not been for Crane's desire to cut the payroll and start over. By the end of November we will know whether a new era is underway for the local Major League franchise or if the team is back on the market. Yet, in terms of once again becoming a relevant force, neither scenario bodes well for the near future.
you think MLB and Crane won't be able to reach an agreement on the move to the AL? do you think MLB will deny Crane ownership over that? forcing Drayton to hold on to the team even after having Crane have input on trades, etc.? i'm so torn on all of this as to what I think will happen. on one hand, i can't imagine MLB turning down Crane's $687 million for the 'stros. and i don't know what drayton would do if he ended up owning the team still...would he agree to a move to the AL after MLB stomped on his deal that he's likely never to see again...knowing he wants out of MLB, anyway? lots of moving parts. i really really really hope they stay NL...no matter who is owner. i'm more concerned with them staying in the NL than I am about the identity of their owner at this point.
If the sale doesn't go through, the Astros will likely go from 3-4 years from maybe being competitive to as long as a decade away. This will set them back so unbelievably far. You have an owner who doesn't want to be there with the worst front office in baseball. You have a major league team with barely enough talent to play AAA and a minor league system that, even after all the trades, is still one of the weakest. If this deal isn't made, the Astros will look more like the Pirates than anything else.
i don't think it's the only issue...but i think they'd hold their nose to accept $687 million for the Astros. i agree with you, i don't think they like the guy...but that's a huge chunk of change they're never going to see again. it exceeds Forbes' estimated value of the 'stros about at least $100 million.
