How many of you have ever told your wife what you do at work?

I know mine has no clue what goes on....I don't think they had any idea that he was scamming.

When you run a scam, the fewer people that know the better......

If there are now 7 biliion people on Earth, The Madoffs are 6.999999 billionth in line for my compassion.

Hey Dad? We come to the office every day, for 10 or 20 years, and we keep cranking out money like it's magic. Nobody else can do do it, but we do. And, some day, you may not be around; you might have an aneurysm or a get hit by a Bentley, you think you might want to share the secret with me?

The wife's story about their failed attempt at suicide was pretty lame. No suicide note, they took some ambien (she couldn't come up with a ballpark figure), and they just woke up the next morning.

Sounded like a narcissistic story for sympathy.

thats another thing, the son is talking about how he knew nothing about it, but then drops in these nuggets of info like how when he asked his dad about who would succeed him, what the plans were, he wouldnt tell him anything.

also, something about the level of the office building where bernie worked was off limits to them...yea, thats not cause for suspicion...

I have as little compassion for the Maddoff's as the next guy...

BUT, to offer some contrary opinions.

The wife may have and likely did know. But I can definitely see the sons not knowing. Being suspicious, sure. But beyond that, even if you're incredibly smart, incredibly self-motivated, etc., if you happen to find yourself in a position where you are super-rich, have a great job, lifestyle, etc. and the biggest concern is why you haven't been included in succession planning for your otherwise seemingly healthy dad who when the parents do eventually pass will otherwise leave behind enormous wealth for you to inherit anyway...

... well, sometimes you just go about your business. And the sons may not have been super individually motivated people anyways.

Maybe Bernie and the wife didn't attempt suicide by sleeping pill, but the one dead son apparently did, and of course when that didn't work, actually killed himself.

Moreover, why all of a sudden turn dad in, if they were in the loop? Yes, the fraud was likely soon to be discovered with the fall, and maybe Bernie thought with all his money he would pay his way out, or he really was having a moral ethical crisis... BUT, you'd think with all that money, even if it meant disappearing forever to never see any family again, there would have been some sort of plan.

Instead, the story that the sons found out, in relatively quick order told authorities, and were themselves devastated to the point of one of them killing themselves, seems believable.

Again, Maddoffs have no sympathy from me, but just looking at what happened...

karma? Bernie ruined many lives, he is staying in the supposed nicest prison in the country. Yes it is green certified, ncier rooms, facilities, he gets freedom, does work here and there, spends time outside. has access to email, computers, phones. That is like a children's day camp. So they still went easy on him despite life sentence.

His wife and kids are still millionaires?

    Karma isn't working out right

    Ask this dude about karma....

Millionaires don't mean ****. Just because because you have money doesn't mean you're happy. They'll pay up in the end, we all do.

As for greedy bern, he's still blowing smoke up people's asses. You think he's really happy in there? Make it out to be what you want, but he's still confined to a federal detention facility forever.

The only positive out of this is the guy (?) handling the trust has acquired an amazing amount of Madoff's clients money. Billions and billions of dollars.

My wife works for an incredibly wealthy dude. His son and daughter work for him too. She said that the kids have no idea about the inner workings of the business, they just do their jobs and get rich.

They wouldn't have any idea if he was scamming or not.

I could see how the kids wouldn't know.
