what else do you want berkman to say? I played on an Astros team that was better, except we didn't win the WS.
The last team to even return to the world series after losing the previous two years was the 1921-23 NY Yankees. So don't get your hopes up. Having said that, 3 teams that lost consecutive world series have come back to win a World Series within the next 3 years: 1952-55 Brooklyn Dodgers 1977-81 LA Dodgers 1991-95 Atlanta Braves.
Berkman made the best baseball decision of his life choosing the cards to play for. If Texas had landed him, then Texas would have won it. That just makes the sting worse for Texas IMO.
Well obviously the team might be greater in terms of having more talent, but I think personality and character plays a great part in creating a great team. Maybe he just meant it in terms of talent, but I'm damn sure the Astros had plenty of great guys in the dugout and no doubt close friends of Berkman. I just figured he'd be a bit more mindful of saying something like that, especially when playing with just one team for 10+ years.
Your team has a worse record now in the World Series, they absolutely choked last night, and they let a weak-hitting Giants team destroy them last year. The Rangers will not make it back to the World Series for at least the next 10 years. They are done in terms of WS appearances for quite some time. Arlington, suck on that!
Berkman wouldn't have been able to take the place of Mark Lowe to help close out the win. The Rangers were impressive considering the lack of a true ace (CJ Wilson that is not) and a relief situation that got found out in the end.
puma said it out of excitement. pretty sure 2004 astros team was pretty loaded . berkman, bagwell, kent, biggio, beltran, clemens, pettite, and oswalt. its okay . he won with st. louis.
It was sad to see Nolan not get a world series win for Texas. Yes, Berkman, I wanted it for him too. But Nolan looked heartbroken and probably deserved it more.
The part that hurts the most is that this team is just the kinda team Houstonians always cheer for, not many big name players but a LOT of underrated good guys. So I think Lance was being completely honest when he said this was the best team he ever played on.
As a lifelong Astros fan, congratulations to the Cards and to Berkman, specifically. It's good to see him win one before he hangs it up. As a lifelong Astros fan, and as a fan of NL play, suck it, Nolan. We don't want to be in your sorry division or your sorry league. The fact that you've been so vocal about wanting a "rivalry" is costing us our team's history. You got your wish early, I hate you and your team before we've played a single divisional game. How sweet it is. I've stayed out of these discussions for fear of jinxing STL, but there shouldn't have been any question about who 'Stros fans should root for. What reason do we have to hate the Cards? Because they were often well-managed, succesful teams? When they beat us, they beat us fair, and although I cursed every one of their names in 2004, I still maintained a begrudging respect for them. Texas has taken up almost none of my attention for decades, besides the few times a year they'd come into town and spank us for the Silver Boot (even when they were bad). The one time they are relevant to my Astros interest is when they're causing my team to be uprooted. Anyway, go Cards, and congratulations to their fans (the classiest in baseball).
But Nolan has won a World Series before. Sure it was 42 years ago, but it is not like he has never experienced it before.
I love Berkman to death, but I can't be happy for him while he's wearing that St. Louis Cardinals uniform.
The weird thing is that if Cruz would have hustled back to the wall last night the Rangers would be the World champs, instead he pussed out and cost his team the championship. Amazing. DD
