Feigen: ROX wont spend $, cuz they have it - will go after Nene, not 2nd tier players

Said so yesterday on SR610 (~12minute mark). Not really surprising, but it's good to hear some Rockets related news/rumors.

"What I think Morey will do ... First of all he doesn't care about buzz. It's gotta be _build the team_ and he'll do anything, as we know, he'll change over the whole team, if it's the right thing to do, but he won't do it for buzz reasons.

They do want a center, but - and I'm gonna write this in the coming days - I really believe they'll go after the biggest, best names, the ones they want the most, or not at all.
In other words they won't give a three or four year contract to Samuel Dalembert, because that's the one they can get.

I think if they don't get what they really want, they put their money in the pocket and try to be the big player next summer, when it's the big free-agency class and the best center is a free agent.
I mean the best center in the league is a free agent next summer and you need a center and you need a star and he's both, so I don't think they just spend their allowence, because they have it.

But I do think, they go after Nene, who has star quality. I don't know if he's a true star yet, or ever will be, but he might and he's offensively - he's there.
Physically he's there. He's a really terrific talent. I bet they go that direction.
Tyson Chandler is so much what they would want. I think they'll look into it.
I just don't think they can get Marc Gasol or DeAndre Jordan, because they're both restricted free agents and everything I've sort of heard is their teams are absolutley commited to matching any offer they get. Now what would be interesting, how all this could change, there'll be an amnesty clause in the new CBA.

    [...]

The Rudy Gay one - what I've sort of heard from the Memphis area - they are gonna match anythig Marc Gasol gets. They're gonna have all those salaries - 'let's see how good we can be' and if they fall short of what they think they ought to be, that's when they might amnesty.

The Rockets get screwed in the this. A team like the Rockets where you don't have some long, stupid contract to get rid of...
The teams that were stupid and put us in this mess, they get a 'out-of-jail-free-card' and we don't get anything?

So what you would do, lets say you get three years to use the amnesty clause. So maybe (the Rockets might use it) then later.
Then you got the other questions - do you then keep Thabeet for an extra year? And if doesn't work out, you can amnesty him next year or you can amnesty him if you sign a center this year or next.
So there's all those kind of things - once we see the real deal - that would then answer questions about what they do in the rushed free-agency period.

But it's my opinion that they will not just go for whatever center they can get and give him a long term deal... Give Kyrolo Fesenko a long term deal, because he's the best center you can get? I just don't see them doing that. Or Sam Dalembert. See, I like Fesenko - and at the right price, sure, bring him in, but they don't wanna do anything that would interfere - any short term 'we need a center now move', that would interfere with next summer. Either get the center you want or get a center who doesn't interfere with getting the one you want next time."

Nene doesn't seem like a huge star to me. Definitely doesn't seem like a guy who would bring us championships. Save the money.

Nene's a 2nd/3rd tier star. Rockets still won't have the superstar they need.

Nene's no Dwight Howard, but he's pretty good. He would definitely be one of the few guys I see the Rockets spending money on.

Nene is not a star; however, put him on the Rockets and watch our 4's that have been forced to play the 5 become exponentially better. That would allow players like Patterson, Hill, Scola and hopefully Hayes a chance to play so much more naturally.

I think it would benefit Hayes and Patterson the most. I don't see Scola with us by the end of this year and he is a guy that is going to produce for you on a consistent basis regardless of who is out there on the court.

Nene would help our team a lot more than he would help many other teams. Morey understand that it's the sum of your parts, not the parts themselves.

I'd be very happy with Nene. Could seen McHale boosting Nene's game to the next level like he did for Jefferson. That would be scary with his abilities.

Nene is one of a handful of big men who can play and demand double teams in the post. I would spend money on him, but at the right price. We would easily make the playoffs with the addition of Nene to the current squad

Nene is just another band aid, rockets should save their money for next years free agency and tank this shorten season, if there is a season.

My two cents -- Don't do anything that impacts your flexibility in 2012 unless you're absolutely, positively sure you can move that contract.

No to NeNe - nice offensive player, excellent passer, plays decent position defense ....But he's soft, doesn't hit the glass ...nor does he bring us the shotblocking/presence we need ....Dude costs way too much and will eat up capspace.

And this is why you rebuild the traditional way. Morey and Les should have seen this coming, now all of our so called "assets" are going to be devalued.

Yup, like many said, better wait for 2012 and try to trade all these assets we have during the season, if there is one.

Nene is good, and he will be a force. He is sklled, athletic, and smart. He was underused in Denever adn they still don't run the ball through him enugh. Put him on the rockets where he will be a consistent 1-2 option and a big man friendly coach like mchale. He will flourish.

    Same ole, same ole.

    Morey doing work.

He is doing the prudent thing, get the team as good as it can be without giving up flexibility.

Seems like the right thing to do, IMO.

Keep in mind that Nene - unlike most other centers - can also play the 4, so going after Nene doesn't necessarily hinder you from going after Dwight Howard next year.

You could still trade Scola for cap space & picks. Theoretically, anyway.

Sure you'd prefer Howard over Nene, but you aren't guaranteed to sign Howard (next year). Far from it, actually.
So if you can get Nene, who can also play alonside Howard, you do it in my opinon. Salaries can moved, cap room can be created.

I don't necessarily think you make your free-agent decisions based on "is this guy a superstar". In fact, I don't think you base your roster-building plans on it, either. There are about 7-9 superstar guys at all positions in a league of about 400 players. We need to be careful and avoid the pretense that we're entitled to a superstar, and that's the only way to win.

If we can get him (somehow) for "the right" price (not handcuffing us in our pipe-dream pursuit of Howard, as Feigen mentinoned) let's do it.

Getting Nene doesn't hinder us from clearing enough cap for 1 Max FA next year. It will hinder us from getting a top 5 pick or clearing enough cap for 2 Max FAs. But with some manuevering, we can still grab a top guy if one's willing to take our money.

Even if the limit on max guys is higher, the Rockets can still pay premium to someone like DWill/CP3/DH by trading Lowry or Scola.

If you Have Nene and Chuckwagon in the post... That's scary with Pat coming in when you need more offense, explosiveness. Doesn't make us the best but I think we become a very attractive team to the 2012 free agent class.

This is like the same thing I remember reading in 2009 and 2010. Just a new name.
