Agreed. It's classic in a way that's different than any other sport. Because the way runs are set up, and build on what happens to the other team members everything builds in a way that is unique to baseball. It's so easy to arm-chair manage every strategic decision from home, as the drama and suspense builds. 5 errors but still one of the greatest games ever. Especially considering the most blatant error was committed by the guy with the walk off homer. Talk about redemption. Of course Berkman has the best BA in the series.
Just to clarify, I'm not going to solely blame the rainout if the Rangers lose this. I'm being hard on MLB for the same reason I'm always hard on officials - too many folks let them off the hook by searching for things to blame that were within their team's control. Plus, as discussed above... the "weather concerns" bull**** excuse brings back unfortunate memories as an Astros fan. Not that I think the 2008 Astros make the playoffs if those games are in Arlington, but it doesn't excuse the ridiculous decision.
I understand..but in the wake of the postponement of Game 6, I didn't hear/read one reporter suggest it was a bad idea. Most were on Twitter immediately saying it was the right decision to make.
Today seems like a bullpen day in general. Hopefully Harrison pitches well, but if not, Holland, Adams, Feldman, and Feliz each going 2 innings covers the entire game barring extra innings again. That, of course, assumes Washington is able to put those guys in and out without having them coming up in critical situations needing to be pinch hit for.
Put aside I want the Rangers to win...Game 6 was one of the best baseball games I've ever seen...Definitely made for TV...I was so wound up and stressed out throughout the game, all the back and forth... Two times, one strike away and choke...That just doesn't happen...And Cruz...WTF? make a fn effort...its the World Series for gd Sakes...go down swinging..And Ogando CANNOT pitch tonight!!!! he's done... I believe the Rangers pull it out tonight...They have proved they can hit Carpenter and on short rest, he's prime...
This is, of course, from the Rangers perspective. Cards probably have to hope that Carpenter goes a while because their bullpen seems to have less dominant talent out there. Carp seems like the perfect big game pitcher, so that's a big plus for them despite his 3 days rest issue.
Totally different situations. Nobody really cared about Astros regular season games and their relocation due to weather. World Series games are more influenced by television than individual team's perspectives. THEY don't want a chance of a rain delay that basically cripples their ratings. Also, its one thing if there was going to be a chance of rain the rest of the week... then you just try to get the games in as scheduled. The fact that the forecast had it as DRY for yesterday and today (but wet on Wednesday) was ample reason enough to wait. I'd rather have non mucky, non threatened games. I know it ended up only misting... but I also know that the Cardinals weren't hoping for a delay just so they may have Carpenter available for a game 7. The Cardinals were worried about one thing and one thing only... winning a game 6 any way possible. Now that they did that... they do have the advantage. Carpenter is still their best option on 3 days rest, even if he's older and thrown the 2nd most innings of any pitcher this year.
Because it was raining during the day. It wasn't supposed to and didn't at night. That's why people immediately praised the decision - because they went and looked outside, and that's the extent of their weather knowledge. Here's the tweet from the local St. Louis weather team at 1:30: http://twitter.com/#!/KMOVWeather
If there were periods of rain forecast, then that would indicate the possibility of a start/stop WS clinching game. I think only in hindsight can you criticize that decision...particularly considering the forecast for the rest of the week was dry.
Fox and MLB made the right decision... mainly due to the dry forecast the rest of the week. The Cardinals didn't have a say, even if Cat wants to believe conspiracy theories. Hell, techinically the Rangers would have gotten Holland (who's been the most dominant of any starting pitcher on either side) on FULL rest for game 7 thanks to the delay... but decided to stick with their original plan.
Anyone who's spent any time around the game knows that home park officials have a very real stake in rainout situations. If you want to call that a conspiracy theory, I guess that's your right, but it's the reality.
