The Exorcist usually makes #1, but I don't find it very scary (or entertaining). I find it somewhat of a relic, and suspect that most people who put it on lists of scariest movies haven't watched a decent horror film in decades. I think Rosemary's Baby, Carrie and Halloween are much better films, and don't suffer from age nearly as much. But then again, I'm not religious, don't believe in the devil, and frankly find the idea of a Catholic exorcism somewhere between comical and offensive - especially since it often involves deluded priests holding down and yelling at a mentally ill or epileptic person. That seems much more horrific to me than any demon.

Also - are you sure about the "more on record" claim? How do you even measure this?

yea, surround sound, HD, late at night ..you know the right atmosphere. That movie has so many jumpy scenes its ridiculous.

The 2nd time I didn't think it was scary, but the whole plot is just one of those really grim storylines and the ending sums up everything full circle.

I watched both Amityville Horror and Exorcist when I was way too young (around 7-8) so they were really scary to me. Especially since my psycho dad got mad at me for screaming so much during Exorcist he stopped the movie and put me in a dark room as punishment.

So you walked in with a preconceived notion and an seemingly unwillingness to suspend belief in this instance rather than the others

i.e. I am open to telekentic girl but devils is just comical

you not liking it is now completely understandable.

    Generally speaking
THE BEST etc is built on timing/moments
I was very young . . .and the Exorcist scare the isht out of me
    the memory never fades

Also I think a lot of people get caught up in the Special Effects
Cutting edge scare special effects of 1979
can be done with a packet from walgreens now

So younger people may like the more modern effects and the effectiveness
of the older effects maybe wasted on them

    Ammitiville Horror killed me
    Portergiest killed me

I remember a Made for TV movie call DARK NIGHT OF THE SCARECROW
that made me sleep a little less

Spoorloos [The Vanishing] (1988) - More of a thriller really... but that ending was one of the darkest and most haunting I'd seen. Don't watch the 1993 remake. It has a slow pace, but you'll like it.
    The Devil's Backbone (2001)
    Don't Look Now (1973)
The Woman In Black (1989) - remake was terrible.
Ju-On (2002) - this is the original Japanese version of the "Grudge"
    [REC] (2007)
Alien (1979) - space horror masterpiece.
    The Descent (2005)
The Tunnel (2011) - has elements of Descent, Blair Witch, and REC

The horror genre is the weakest in terms of a limited number of high quality movies. Once you've seen the top 10 or 15, it's a steep drop after that. You really need to adjust your expectations.

This one had some pretty terrifying scenes. If I'm not mistaken, Silent Hill was influenced by it.

I remember watching that at a friends house with his dad and he was like, "look at this part, he starts sucking all up on her finger *sucks finger*" That part creaped me out as a kid

David Cronenberg's early sci-fi/horror movies are quite freaky. It's probably dated now but The Brood had some disturbing scenes.

Another beautifully grotesque rather than scary is Possesion.
