If taking others ideas and repackaging it to be cool considered innovation? Should diddy (and hip hop music in general) get more credit from the media?

Who is "p diddy," and why should I care about him, assuming he exists?

Correct. He deserves even less credit than he's currently given.

Do you remember what the cellphone and music industry were like before the iPhone and iPod?

i think the thread is interesting. the guy is still a visionary, he took products and told people how much they would like them because he saw the value in them. that's part of a ceo's responsibility, to see the next new thing.

AKA Puffy AKA Sean Combs. He's the head of Bad Boy records that "took hits from the 80's and make'em sound crazy". He achieved commercial success in using parts of songs from 80's rock as hooks for more modern hip hop. Why you should care? He was at one time the biggest thing in music and still is a large presence, he's also rich I guess.

I had a Creative USB player that fit on my key chain. Everyone on campus was using Kazza/Morpheus, even the cool kids that didn't know anything about computers before that. Also, mp3 was the dominant format and it worked on every device. After I Pod, I bought a couple of sandisk players I think before they became obsolete as every phone started to be able to play mp3s.

I also had a sharp looking Razor phone that lasted 4 days without a charge before the I-Phone. I now have a mytouch 4g.

Industry-wise things were moving just as fast in Asia on the tech side (phones and personal players become obsolete after 1 year even before the I Pod), it's just that U.S. didn't have as big of need to have the newest of those device till Jobs told them to.

He was smarter than the rest because he kept it under wraps better. How often do we see "google buying up this, google buying up that".

Jobs was a genius at making it seem like Apple was churning out all these ideas at some in-house think tank.

Run DMC: Walk this way. look it up. Most rap songs have always sampled from others. Diddy was a hack that got away with murdering tupac.

Run was good and probably a better pure MC. However, Diddy when he was Puffy was Music at the time. He might not be the most skilled (just like Apple doesn't usually have the best tech), but the overall package with hype williams videos allowed him to sell a ton of records. Everybody was listening to his stuff, while his critics were all over him for sampling while every tech critic goes gaga over an inferior tech product with a better marketing. How many people using an IPhone 4 knows the difference between that and an IPhone 3 if the cases were similar?

If only programmers could use or understand computers, and had to stop once they wanted to be taken seriously by other adults, maybe.

Discussing Jobs' contribution to technology is one thing but the music industry?? He was more like the crown prince of the RIAA.

As for technology, I would argue his greatest contributions took place in the 80s when he and Woz took steps that were formative for the modern home PC. As for the last decade, he was more of a salesman and trendsetter of sorts--the Billy Mays of computers if you will, heh. Okay, that's not fair, but during this period, Jobs/Apple were not innovators of technology, but rather, creators of an excellent business model in which consumer products were marketed with a "cool" factor. As wizkid83 already noted, this is mostly relevant in the western world--east Asia is at any given point 10 years ahead of us regarding consumer technology and easily laughs at toys like Apple products... and most other offerings from other companies I imagine.

In closing, I will quote Richard Stallman: "Steve Jobs, the pioneer of the computer as a jail made cool, designed to sever fools from their freedom, has died" Eh, Stallman's a little nutty, and the statement is definitely a bit harsh... but it mostly rings true for me.
