I suppose these could be the same, but there are some that don't scare me anymore (Silence of the Lambs) that I think are the best, and there are some that scare the crap out of me (The Hills Have Eyes) that I might not put as the best. Best: 1. Psycho 2. The Exorcist 3. Jaws 4. Silence of the Lambs 5. The Shining Scariest: 1. The Exorcist 2. The Hills Have Eyes 3. The Thing 4. The Omen 5. Carrie
I have never found any horror movie to be scary. I judge horror movies on how hilarious I find them to be. Some of my favorites: Leprechaun (the whole series) Troll 2 Birdemic: Shock and Terror I guess the only horror movie that I've enjoyed un-ironically would be The Shining. I don't consider any of the Hannibal Lector films to be horror movies, they're more like thrillers. EDIT: I forgot about Cube. That movie was genuinely interesting and entertaining.
When I first saw The Ring I thought it was on the scary side ( I hadn't heard or knew anything about it beforehand) But the only movie I found scary then, and still do today is the first original Friday the 13th.
The Ring scared me for a good few days after watching it, still does on occasion. PA3 def hit the spot for me lately since it's the only good horror flick to have come out recently. If you want scary, watch Japanese horror movies. They make the American films look like child's play, no pun intended.
1. Deep Red 2. The Exorcist 3. Evil Dead 2 4. The Shining 5. Dawn Of The Dead (Original) 6. The Tenant 7. The Innocents 8. Eyes Without A Face 9. Alfred Hitchcock 10. Vincent Price (I can't stand when folks list Jaws as a horror movie...)
Rosemary's Baby was far scarier than most films you list. I also remember people walking out of the theater when Cujo was released. People were having heart attacks from that movie.
I've really liked The Ring, The Grudge, and the Paranormal Activity series. The paranormal activity series has been the best horror movies in years. So simple yet so damn creepy and nerveracking
Monsters and zombies and those gory movies don't count as horror for me. It's those supernatural ghost/spirit types that are scary (but doesn't have anything to do with religion or God). The Ring and 6th Sense scared me good. Story wise I think The Others had a really good twist in the end.
i agree with cujo. saw it a week ago on amc after 20 plus years. still has some effective "damn... that's effed up" moments.
The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre scared the crap out of me. Creepy. Game 6, Rox vs Jazz 1997 Playoffs.
Kubricks The Shining - hands down the scariest for me...of course it doesn't help that I first saw it in first grade. Although I did think that the made for TV version from the late 90's was pretty interesting, but it wasn't scary. The Exorcist The Omen
The Exorcist and The Thing are always at the top of my list. The Ring and Paranormal Activity, for recent flicks, really unsettled me when I saw them the first time. There was a movie I watched as a kid, on TV of all things, that always bugged me, Dark Night of the Scarecrow. Haven't watched it in ages so I don't know how it holds up now if I watch it again.

scared the eff out of me when i was a kid. some reallllyyyy disturbing imagery that still haunts me sometimes.
I'm always surprised Serpent and The Rainbow never makes these lists. I'm partial to all the first ones I saw. Dawn Of The Dead (Original) Buio Omega (Beyond The Darkness is how it is titled now. I saw it on VHS titled Buried Alive) - I guess these made Horror all about the gore for me. Paranormal Activity and Blair Witch were a lot of fun in the theatre the first week they opened, but lost a lot on repeated viewings. EDIT: Recent ones I really liked were [REC] and [REC]2. In spanish with a Zombie/Religion twist.
