I think you learn from history, recognize the fact that it is history, and go from there.

At one point in time, everyone on the planet's ancestors were enslaved. Humanity has been doing that forever.

There is nothing to apologize for, none of us were slave owners.

You can recognize the residule effects of slavery and work to combat those, but to use slavery as an excuse of some sort as to why people are not getting a fair shake or a break, is pretty weak.

Slavery was ended in the USA more than 140 years ago, and even MLK was nearly 50 years ago - it is time to move on, and away from blame, and towards working together.
