You put any of the other top 5, or 10 centers on that Celtics team I think we see the same result. Admittedly maybe not the Admiral as I said earlier, but just about any other of the centers that have been discussed in this thread.
Sorry, but I don't agree with that statement.... People don't realize that Russell averaged about 20 points a game when he was in college, that's a lot of points back in the 50's. Bill, changed his game to win games.. A lot of players want do that, especially Wilt... He wanted to be the main attraction. But being the ultimate team player is what really made Russell so great. As for that one guy that says russel was the best defensive player of all time you are sadly mistaken. The 2 best defensive players in the history of basketball are Olajuwon and Jordan. Nobody else even comes close.....
Pippen was way better than Mike on D. He's the greatest perimeter defender of all-time despite his exceptional run with our Rockets
Pippen was able to focus on defense much more so than jordan because jordan had to carry the team on offense. If you had to stop a guy for 1 particular play i'd put jordan on him over Pippen. Obviously it depends on the player but in general if Jordan had to pull up his shorts and actually make a stop he did. Lets keep in mind..... 9x All NBA Defensive team which is the record 3x led nba in steals. pippen only had 1 Jordan won Defensive player of the year, pippen never did. I know its the popular opinion to pick pippen but when it comes down to it I don't think there is much of a debate.
I don't think that all this all nba defensive team selections really matters. Kobe has 11 those selections, Dream had nine. If Kobe could be considered as a better defensive player than Hakeem on any planet, this planet should be destroyed by comet, asteroid or nuclear warfare Pippen was much smarter on D, played harder on D, he was longer, he had huge wingspan alongside his footwork and decent athleticism which made him better than MJ in this department. And Scottie actually was able to guard any type of offensive players on 1-3 positions because they weren't able to post him up, beat him of the dribble or just shoot over him. We all see what Michael was able to do on offense in second three peat and Scottie was able to defend him as much as anyone. Nobody, except maybe The Glove, played better defense on him than Pippen in practices. You needed a screen or something huge in your crossover arsenal to destroy him one on one That's actually quite a reason for Pippen's progress, when you should defend MJ every day on a team's practice alongside a 100 games season and you should do it for 5-6 years.... Well. It helps you a lot on D. It's a huge advantage. Michael wasn't able to have it Michael wasn't the same after his first retirement on D and all his selections were more about respect than actual level of play. A lot of players showed it there, but only Iverson's crossover was highlighted as a sensation one
