He should have made a Gahdafi analogy to catch up with the news that people really care.

LOL so not only are the players entitled, they also seem to be pretty stupid, and hiring stupid PR guys. Slavery? 400k-20M a year salary, free workouts, gym, massages, spa, food and shoe contracts and they call it slavery? I wonder what the average American thinks of their so-called slavery...

I believe its the depiction Gumble is referring to. On one side you have billionaire owners who all just so happen to be white. They make 99% of their profit off of the their product the players, all of whom are at the meetings are African Americans.

Then you have Stern, sitting up on his high tower backing the owners, who he is "so proud of", because they are still allowing the dirty, mean, players to negotiate with them.

I think we all agree that the racial implications look, really, really bad.

I think you and Gumbel should do some research into the ownership of the teams.

Michael Jordan is white? Does Larry Bird know that?

Gumbel is criticizing Stern, specifically, and made no mention of the owners or their races. I don't think a black commissioner would handle these negotiations any differently, but Gumbel is arguing that his actions are hurting the process rather than helping.

The only one who could possibly be a slave to David Stern is Marv Albert.

Would the racial implications look bad in reverse? If white players couldn't handle taking orders from a black commissioner would it be because they're racist?

While the comparison is harsh, I get it. I think Stern has his own selfish reasons in his managing of the lockout.

I would beat the living hell out of him if I could. No, that doesn't solve the problem, but Stern thinks he's untouchable.

In case your completely ignorant, which you very well might be, you might remember that we live in a country with a very bad racially divided history. One where the negative impacts were very one-sided.

So, your question is irrelevant. White European Americans have not been racially surpressed in our country's history, so no, it would not look as divisive to have African American business owners sticking it to White American athletes.

Michael Jordan has been completely absent in lockout negotiations. I think he is the one owner who has been on the other side of things and could help bridge the gap to get a deal. The fact that he has been so absent doesn't say much about him as an owner, or as a former member of the NBPA.

ha yea really, two owners have been black, we have a hispanic owner...compared to other leagues, the NBA is incredibly progressive and now we have a foreign owner, it seems stern has been pushing the social and progressive agenda for a while.

under his leadership NBA allocated a boat load of money towards NBA cares, community impact, NBA africa/Asia, yes he wants money and exposure, but still, they have great social causes and he didn't have to do that under his helm when he could sign off on them by himself.

under him the CBA progressed in a way that never has happened and the past CBA was the best for players in ALL sports with guaranteed contracts, high money, HE signed off on that....now its not sustainable, but dont forget who gave you that and they can't adjust to real market value and so they are crying 'let us play'...

He is the one who starts the rookie tranisition and offers counseling to NBA players with programs to help them invest and manage their finances...this is a league where playeres go broke on their MULTI million contracts within 6-8 years of retiring something like 50-6 percent of players have declared bankruptcy. This wasn't his problem, yet he still signed off on this. So is he really this evil racist guy just bc now he realized the last CBA is not sustainable and market has drastically changed....

Pease, I can't respect Gumbel any more

I was responding to the poster who said all of the owners are white. I missed his implication that he was just talking about the owners who have been physically present for the negotiations.

Affirmative Action is racial suppression. Whites are the only group that can be legally discriminated against.

This really doesn't deserve a response but sure... ok replace suppressed with discriminated against. Im pretty sure this country does not have a history of discriminating against White Americans.

I am by no means saying that I think Stern is a racist and that the NBA has not had a history of pushing racial boundaries. Im just simply stating that I believe Bryant Gumbel was referring to the depiction of this scenario and how bad Stern is making himself look despite what he has done for the league.

The fact that you refer to affirmitive action as racial suppression against white people is pretty frightening. Im not even going to go there.

You may want to do some research on how the Irish, Germans and Jews have been treated historically in this country.

Im actually a pretty big history buff.

If you really want to compare the racial disrimination of German immigrants vs. Black Slaves in the south be my freaking guest.

Regardless, this is not a race-war thread, but people like you are sure trying hard to stir it up.
