This might be too soon of a thread to start, but I've been debating it for a week or so.

With the addition of Jim Harbaugh, Alex Smith seemingly has revitalized his career. He is putting up some great numbers (although, he is not throwing the ball as much as the rest of the league). My question is a simple one:

Will the emergence of Alex Smith hurt Andrew Luck at all?

Surely, there is no way Luck will not be the number one pick. I'm just wondering if Alex Smith continues to have the season that he's been having, do people start to dig a little more into Luck's game? What kind of questions will be raised about Luck, if any?

Personally, I don't think Smith really hurts Luck all that much - it's just something I've been thinking about. An interesting corollary I thought I'd bring up.

    I don't understand what you're saying.

Are you trying to say that since Alex Smith has done a good job and unexpectedly had some early season success that the Niners are now out of the Suck for Luck sweepstakes?

Or are you saying that comparison sake, Smith and Luck are similar and a team should either take him or pass on him because they both are similar in playing style?

How is Alex Smith playing better bad for Luck. If he continued to suck it up, then you could theorize that Luck could be a bust.

BTW, I don't see what everyone else sees in Luck. I think he could be pretty good, but nothing I've seen from him makes me feel that he is special. I guess not having any negatives/question marks to his game makes him special. He definitely doesn't give me the feeling I got when I saw Manning play in college.

I'm saying that Alex Smith has sucked for basically his entire career. All of a sudden, former quarterback Jim Harbaugh (also Luck's college coach, up until this season) steps in, and lo and behold, Smith is playing great. I'm asking how much does this quick turn around play into Jim Harbaugh being there, and in lieu of that, how much does the Harbaugh factor play into a scout's evaluation of Luck here on it?

I then said that Luck is having a great season again this year, and I don't think it will have much of an impact. I said that I thought it was an interesting topic to discuss.

I feel like I'm in the twilight zone with the responses this thread has gotten.

Or am I just stupid? Maybe I'm stupid.

you didn't explain well, we didn't get the coach connection from the first post. nice attempt to start an interesting discussion but i think its irrelevant. luck is an awesome talent, i don't think many people will attribute most of his success to harbaugh.

Normally I have no problem bluntly pointing out stupid OPs. In this case, I understand your question. Maybe you could have stated it clearer.

Andrew Luck has the arm-strength and accuracy to make all the throws, has the best footwork I've ever noticed in a college football QB (except for Peyton Manning), is very athletic/mobile, seems very intelligent and has his head screwed on straight. I don't think NFL teams will think he's solely made by Jim Harbaugh. The guy has franchise QB tattooed on his forehead whoever his coach is.

I can't answer whether you are stupid or not.

Its not like Alex Smith was a complete nobody who came out of nowhere, he was a former #1 overall draft pick after all. Hes always been a system quarterback who needed a good offensive mind to pull the strings, it just took the 49ers 7 years with 7 different OC's to find one.

I'm still not sold on Alex Smith. I betcha he turns into a pumpkin again sometime during the season. I predict he will not be the 49ers starting QB next year.

Alex Smith actually completed 60% of his passes over the last 2 seasons with 32tds 22ints. While not great, it isn't like he has been terrible recently.

For some perspective, Brees threw 33tds and 22ints last year. Brees throws way more often, and his completion percentage is a ridiculous (69%), but it shows you that the td-int rate isn't too bad.

Luck will be a top 10 QB his first year as a starter and improve to be top 3 in the next couple years after. His balls are staying in my mouth.

I understand what you're asking. I think. Are you asking if Luck is just a product of our good Harbaugh actually is like Smith seems to be this year? I don't think so. Luck is the real deal.
