Would you rather work for the man -corporate america, make good cash ( say 100K) 9-5 , 2 weeks vacation a year, lame commute, travel to exotic locales like oklahoma city, corporate meetings , upon meetings, and dinner with hertz execs.

    or

work at home in your own small little rinky dink businesses?
At home pros are being your own boss, be around your kids
cons scraping by never have enough money( say 35k a year and an annoyed wife) . Cash flow of orders incoming is not even. possibility of more income later from the small businesses, but it's going to be scrape by city for at least the next 6-8 years.

    What would you do?

I'd take the corporate job. I would want to provide my family (especially the kids) with a more than comfortable life, and if that means sacrificing my flexibility/freedom, so be it. With a 9-5, I would still have time to spend with my family so it's not like I'm completely missing out on the kids' lives. Now if I'm making $100k+ and I'm always in meetings or traveling, that's a tougher decision.

    thanks for your response.rep.
the travel and meetings is the mundane aspect of it. Definitely tons of pressure at a corporate job itself.emails and the typical corporate backstabbing. kids become a way way in the backseat(80% less involvement) if you are immersing yourself like you should be at a job like that. It would become more than 9-5 as well.

I kinda do both. I have a comfy corporate job that pays a decent salary and gives me security. That gives my wife the lattitude to be an entrepreneur. Doesn't matter if she scrapes by because I have the household covered. But, if she strikes it rich, I'm golden.

Can't pin it to one situation. I'm in one now where the potential to get up to the 6-figure number is possible and (hopefully) likely in the near future...but I can do it without sacrificing my family life. I will have to travel more than I do now (which is currently once per quarter) but it wouldn't be so much that I'll be missing out.

While I love the idea of being my own boss, it wouldn't be until I've made enough to remain comfortable and the kids are old enough that I'm not missing their lives while putting in 100 hrs/week to get the business off the ground.

This is ideal. I'm hoping to get to the point above so that my wife can do something she loves...

    Corporate job.

If I ever were self-employed, I'd make sure it'd make me rich.

Problem is, 'good cash' is shrinking. I foresee that the only way to make decent scratch working for the man is to BE the man. Ergo, #2.

    I'd love to be self-employed.
But its not worth it to be doing that and being poor.

i know it's different when you have a family, but it seems a little one sided, if youre making 100k. 35k isn't a lot in any situation, but 100k can be enough for two people...i'd take the corporate job. If the two salaries were closer together, say 55 and 80, well then i may go for a small business. Sometimes you think your own business means more family time, but it doesnt. Its even more responsibility and you may find yourself with even less time.
