Yes, they got her to lie during 50 hours of interrogation where they manipulated her, pressured her, scared her, etc. .

Most people would be a complete wreck at the end of that. That is why she said she didn't trust the police.

    Exactly.
Interrogation tactics work on both innocents and criminals.
People will do anything to avoid the pain.

Why she lied is very strange. But that doesn't make someone guilty.

Fact is that if she was involved, how ridiculous it would have had to been.

Somehow she would have had to have some association with the murderer - which there was no evidence to connect the two.

For some reason they would have had to have a reason for going back to her apt from his apt - again for what reason?

They would have had to fake all the phone calls to the friends and her mom.

They would have plotted to call the police.

They would have washed away all blood or other DNA evidence, hide their clothes...etc - no sign of a cover-up ever came about. No DNA or finger prints tying them to the crime scene

She has no history of violence or cult behavior. It really doesn't add up at all as to why she was ever found guilty in the first place or for that matter - why was she even ever tried?

True. I guess nobody ever heard about the Central Park jogger and the several teens that were convicted of that crime.

Then why accuse someone who was not even there? Why turn off your cell phone? Why stage a break in?

1.) Cause they were threatening her with 30 years of jail, she was exhausted, there was some lost in translation as she didn't speak full Italian then, and they were manipulating her into either confessing she did it or telling them who did with no let-up until she gave them something they wanted to hear. She said they even struck her on the head when she said something they didn't accept and had her uncomfortably cuffed.
2.) Cause people turn off their cell phones when they are going to murder someone versus turning them off to enjoy a night alone together of watching "Amelia" and having steamy pot smoking sex all night in their first weekend night together alone.
3.) Turn to the guilty perp. He said he had consensual sex with Meredith, was in the bathroom after when someone broke in and murdered her, he then had a tussle with the assailant, and then he fled. Yea...that's believable. My guess is the perp either staged the break-in to fit the story he was making up before he fled the crime scene...that an assailant broke in after he had sex with her and while he was in the bathroom...or that was actually the point of entry for the perp. Guy also has history of break-ins: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,529951,00.html

I had forgotten about that. Damn.

I just read that Ken Burns is making a documentary about it. They're still fighting out a civil suit with the city.

Yes, I think we have all heard about many cases where someone is subjected to intense interrogation and they finally give the cops what they want, whether it's true or not. I believe many people have even confessed to crimes the didn't commit, just to end the interrogation.
