That is some of the worst garbage passed off as journalism I have ever seen, even on Faux News. I hope you posted this as a joke. Unbelievable.
I do not see how, at this point in our lives and knowing what we do, how anybody can support the aims of the super rich and defend what has become of our system. Tallanvor, please watch the chess scene from season one of The Wire. Yes, the analogy specificLly references drug dealers, kingpins and those stuck in The Game. But we're all stuck in the largest Game there is and I can only hope that more people are waking up to reality.
It is eyebrow-raising to see right-wing pundits denounce and mock the protesters after spinning so hard to legitimize the tea party. Sadly, the protesters appear to be actually aiming at the folks the tea party should have been angry with too - but I doubt those on the far-right will realize it - or be told as much by their preferred media outlets.
Actually, I've heard from people at the protest that libertarians and progressives are happy to have each other's support at the protest on issues the agree on like the war on drugs, foreign policy, and civil liberties.
CNN can always top that. <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/jLpVAHJ6R48" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
tea party != libertarian. Furthermore, the idea of a libertarian uprising against corporate influence and greed is strikingly incoherent. Sure, on civil liberties and foreign policy there may be agreement, but the agreement dies with the libertarian insistence for deregulation.
You know, I would be happy if all the protesting would just be directed at campaign finance reform. A lot of frustration could be avoided if money wasn't free speech, corporations weren't given the same rights as people and every cent of political donations were traceable and transparent. As it stands now any corporation, or, any foreign government for that matter can undermine the most fundamental principles of democracy, a free press and representative government. Qualified legitimate candidates for office should be held to equal budgets. Otherwise it just money begetting money.
The protestors are largely correct. The mainstream media let alone the conservative media are largely wrong. Exactly, but it won't keep the conservatives or contented moderates from nit-picking on the particulars. Oh the protestors demands are not coherent. The protestors should be out faxing resumes, or dressing better. Why include this issue. Why include that issue. WRT to a coherent demand, obviously cranky old Murdoch owned media or the typical corporate media would do the typical spin number on whatever particular demand they would have. The Koch brother and other conservative elite endowed business professors and think tanks will keep generating spin to justify or at least confuse the issue.
I love the Wall Street blame. Think the employees of Bear Stearns, Lehman, Citi, AIG and more haven't gotten smoked? Huge portions of the shares outstanding of these firms were owned by the employees. In Bear Stearns, 20% of the overall stock was owned by its own employees. Most these guys had huge stakes in their own companies and the lunacy of their leveraged bets and hubris about the markets led to their demise. They made bad investments that primarily were based on more loans and credit and opportunities to those that never had it. Most people benefitted from the upside and this as a whole threw us into a recession. The bursting of a real-estate and credit bubble based on excessive speculation. I don't see people protesting the people that bought two houses with nothing down, took money out of them like an ATM and then strategically defaulting. I don't see people complaining about municipalities and politicians that made fortunes on increased property taxes, I don't see people complaining about the housing industry and their overbuilding. There's blame to go around to EVERYONE. So just blaming Wall Street is populist garbage. This is a land of opportunity, go out and make something of yourself.
Do you blame a wildfire on the spark that started the blaze or the dry vegetation that subsequently burns? This is the blog connected t the movement: http://wearethe99percent.tumblr.com/
The particulars, of course, also being known as "the truth" or "the facts". It's amusing that you think you should be able to make up things and then blame everyone else for "nit-picking" when you get called out on it. If you have a credible argument, why not use actual facts instead of talking point rhetoric? You (rightfully) have a big problem with right-wing crazies making up things that aren't true to bolster their arguments, but then seem to do the exact same thing.
Agreed. It's indicative of "libertarians" being so enamored with the civil liberty/social policy side that they misunderstand the import of the full philosophy. It's great to have total freedom until deregulation leaves you beholden to your corporate overlord.
It's not " pay my student loan', " it's not "we are all broke up in here". It is that we are on a course to an undemocratic corporatocracy if we don't somehow derail it. The corporate interests can buy the narrative and the influence. Populist only have the grass roots. A part of that is civil disobedience, a noble resistance, proven to be effected and ethical around the world and through history. Somebody needs to be the charismatic spokesman though; not Michael Moore or Dennis Kucinich.
