I'm an Android developer, I know. I'm speaking for the iPhone being on Sprint. This device will definitely be popular on Sprint and attract lots of new customers, and alot more people upgrading to a smartphone. Look at the Verizon iPhone, it came out 6 months after the initial one did and it's still sold over 2+ million. Verizon DID NOT need the phone either, they are extremely successful with their "DROID" line-up of phones. This Sprint iPhone will be going on launch day, and you know it's going to sell. As much as I think Android is a ton better, people will buy this device simply because it does what it needs to do and it's a decent device. Plus, Sprint outsources their network maintence to Ericcson. The towers that Sprint uses arent even owned by them anymore. They are owned by TOWERCO. So say for instance network problems start to arise out of this.. expect them not to be fixed so quickly Sprint will need to add 1900 mhz overlay to create sufficient capacity most likely. Plus Wi-max is a complete joke, i Just hope that the Sprint iPhone doesn't have that capability. Data speeds on Sprint aren't all that great either. Average is about 800kbps. Theoretically EVDO-A can go up to 3.1 mbps but you'll never see that on Sprint. Sprint is going all out on this device, they've ordered a ton and they will sell a ton just because it's an iPhone. This has the potential to save crappy Sprint and their $3.00 stock, or make them better. I'm currently on VZW and this really doesn't apply for me as I'm waiting for something none of you guys are. The Nexus Prime, or the HTC Vigor
It's better because it has Adobe Flash, and actually the stock Android browser SUCKS. I use Dolphin HD, and for your iOS users, it is available to you too.
Honestly as an Android user flash is just a pain in the ass. Slows down load times and most content is optimized for mobile now days
Flash is a big thing. You also have choices of other browsers and then can use their own rendering engine. If you don't like the stock one you can use opera which has hardware acceleration or firefox or whatever. You aren't locked into a single one like the iOS system.
Depends on the type of Android device. If it's a mid level range phone, then yeah probably. Rendering on Android is completely different from iOS. Don't get me wrong, I've developed on the iPhone too. I was running iOS5 Beta 7 not too long ago. iOS5 has some great improvements but I still favor the other OS. Anyways, I'm not trying to go off-topic here. It's an iPhone thread lol. My recommendation is just to wait and see. (Like Apple wants you too)
Oh, and one last thing I forgot to mention about the Sprint network. Leap Wireless (Cricket) recently signed a huge deal with Sprint to use their network, in about a month or two, Cricket will be selling nationwide. Now chances are that it uses the old Sprint 1900mhz network, but that might still be an issue with capacity. Sprint allows ton of MVNO's to operate on their spectrum.
What does that mean for virgin mobile users? Isn't the old 1900mhz sprint network the same one they operate on?
Yes sir, it's the same exact one. It means a very clogged up network. Boost CDMA phones (not iDen) also utilize the 1900mhz network.
im using Dolphin, Mercury, and Safari on my iPhone. didn't realize i was locked into a single browser.
Still non of it could play Flash. Steve Jobs just like to control you people. Don't really see the harm of having Flash on one browser and one without Flash.
IIRC, Webkit is the engine. Do you think this is only used for iPhone's Safari? Anyhow, Royals is quite correct. This isn't an Android thread. Interested in seeing what exactly is getting announced tomorrow. EDIT: Wait, I missed this Sprint exclusive stuff. that seems highly doubtful. Don't see how this article really points in that direction?
i guess theyre fixing that with Opera mini6 for iOS. i still find Safari to be the fastest atm. maybe thatll change with iOS5.
Most Android browsers, Safari and the webOS browser all use WebKit. But a lot of performance differences come from several factors: - CPU processing power - Graphics rendering performance - The speed/efficiency of the JavaScript engine - Overhead That's why not all WebKit browsers are created equal.
